A letter is sent to the throne of Akovia, sealed with a red, rubber stamp and sent to the King.

Lord Chancellor Vasili Vanir reads over the letter several times, a frown fixed upon his brow. Noble Lords, attempting to assassinate a young girl? These were dark times, indeed. The hulking Vanir folded the letter several times over and made his way into the inner council room of Mount Letholdus, to bring this troubling news to King Vydra and the rest of the Privy. He also orders for a copy of the letter to be penned and sent to High Pontiff Daniel, in the hopes that he might be able to investigate this situation himself and save Akovian man-power for the battle against Aesterwald.

It had been Daniel's worst fear. She was ceremonially slaughtered like a lamb to the sacrifice in appeasement to the Renatian cult of personality. Briarwood, briarwood, it all made sense, the blood, the manor, peoples silence at the defiled grave. How could they call themselves knights, lords, heroes of the heartland? There was no grace in Lorina's death, no virtue, nothing to reflect her gentle personality and bubbly youth.

But Daniel's despair soon festered into a wild desire for justice. This was wanton murder and sacrilege, the defilement of graves and the dead. This was his sister hunted down and smothered by rock and rubble. This was a direct threat against his own self, barrowborn but crowsblood. And yet this was the vassal of the illustrious Duke de Savoie during a time of religious turmoil and foreign invasion; Daniel had to act with precision and caution.

The Vice-Chancellor Humbert of Bar made his rounds around the Cyriaen campground before stopping at the tents of Karol Andriukaitis and Branaford Fairheart, leaving under their doors two letters bearing the Pontifical seal. It seems the pair had an investigation to undertake.

Jean Valois had discovered the maimed Lorina - injured terribly, but fully alive - sitting in the chapel of Karovia a few nights after the attempt on her life. After Jean helped her clean up and lending her new clothes - a faded blue dress once belonging to his mother - she told him of the horror she had faced at the hands of Briarwood and the Undead. Although Briarwood had not ordered the murder, he had witnessed it and stubbornly refused to help, even after hearing Lorina beg to be spared. His refusal to help and subsequent condemnation of Lorina made him, at the very least, an accessory to the crime.

Anyone who had recently visited Karovia would have reason to doubt Jean's claims, though. A young girl matching Lorina's description could be seen wandering around near Jean's home. Although her long, black hair had been hastily chopped into a short page-boy style, she still wore her signature red ribbons. The bandages on her hands - the heavy scarring, the blood - would all indicate something more had happened to this girl than anyone let on.
