Cannons!

I'm putting this here so it doesn't get hastily denied, as this isn't a suggestion per se.

DISCUS the possibility of cannons on LotC as if there were no silly OOC restrictions. Do they have a place in our world? How would they fit with existing seige engines? What about boats?

GO.

lol i can already imagine like two guys just rolling cannons up to random places and gated areas and blowing them to bits with like 4 emotes of RP and creating a hole 5x5.

so, yes, but only on ships or bastions.

As soon as I saw this I said, "Oh no."

Anyways, cannons more or less could have a place on LotC, but they would completely take over every other siege weapon in existence. The original problem with cannons was that Alras invented them legitimately, but they sold fake ones to Oren whom in turn said they were real and I believe started copying the design. The problem was not that the cannons had no place as much as if they were implemented this moment everyone would have them by tomorrow and you would never see another trebuchet/ballista/siege tower/mangonel/onager/scorpion ever.

Also this would lead to guns which isn't the direction the staff means the server to go. The server is meant to go down the path of advanced magical technology not advanced conventional technology.

There isn't really a need for them. I get that this was just a discussion thread, but I haven't seen anyone really advocate for cannon's returning. Come up with a reason why we should bring them back first, and then we'll discuss why that's dumb and we hate it.

I'd argue that one doesn't see regular siege weapons in wars and such or at least I haven't during my time here. The same goes for at least using the scaddernacks for siege purposes. I imagine it's much similar elsewhere however. After all, why spend the time emoting a trebuchet or siege monster when you can simply drop some tnt and pvp it out?

I've always enjoyed doing trebuchets and stuff. Haven't been around for the age of TNT recently. I'd say what you describes is pretty boring and I could get 24 hours a day on certain PvP servers. Being able to RP trebuchets and stuff though is just cool. Dropping TNT and running through a small hole sounds boring and anti-climatic.

Cannons are very powerful, especially if they use dispensers for their shots. Even if you ban dispensers, I can still come up with powerful cannons, so I don't think cannons should be allowed at all. Players from another server have known me to be an expert cannoneer. Here are some examples:

Seeing how dynamite exists IC on LOTC, it seems logical for someone to decide to contain the explosion of one and use it to propel a projectile.  I mean collectively we have some pretty advanced architecture and engineering, not to mention the complex understanding of magic and our natural world that we possess.  We are not stupid.

I don't see any tremendous advantage to cannons in LOTC.  Dynamite is expensive, the cannons themselves would be expensive (having to be made from metal or a stronger material), and cannons themselves would be more dangerous to operate than normal siege weapons.  As for it leading to hand-held firearms: perhaps our methods of creating dynamite, or the actual gunpowder we use, will not allow for firearms to be developed due to the danger of their use, or the sheer impracticality of them.

I just don't understand how something that should logically exist, and that can be mechanically created, is not allowed on the server.  If the fear is that they are too powerful, their mechanical functionality can easily be nerfed or disabled in favor of an RP functionality, or mechanical functionality with moderator oversight.

To put it simple, cannons in Lord of the craft are possible, in anything though they need to have the right price to be achieved in game (X amount of resources, or X amount of money).  Along with this, the amount of resources would need to be incredibly high to balance cannons out, or instead a ridiculous drawback.

1812- Cannon version.
