The 1.8.7 update didn't go as smoothly as planned, but that's not surprising, some bugs are to be expected. The issue has been resolved by the Development Team and the Global Moderator team is now working hard setting up entrances (and portals) to the mines. They should be available shortly.

 

Of course, apologies for the inconvenience the missing mines caused, now you can break your picks to your hearts content. Farmer Billy will be providing taters in the morrow for all tears shed on this event.
