What if you get a skin made by a friend and use it for a while but then later they decide to claim plagiarism to get  back at you for something or whatever?

Then they are a awful friend? Anyway, the chances are there would br some skype logs or similar that could help with that situation...

Obviously, but what's the official stance on that? Can someone revoke your privilegia to use a skin they have made once you have it?

It's a skin.. Anybody can just download the file and claim that they made it.

Most skin makers can be recognized by their style, some people use very similar style but still have something in them which makes them unique.

@AGiantPie

If you don't trust your friends save proof of the conversation.

It's a general hypothetical question - at what point does the skin become "yours" so that you can use it without plagiarism? Can skin makers revoke your use of their skin? There's a lot of muddled specifics here honestly.

I'd say it's quite obvious that you can't claim the credits for making the art when you paid for a commission, but you're allowed to use it as yours.

But what if it's free?

Then surely it would be treated as if you purchased it. It just had a price tag of zero.

And if it's free, then it was probably a friend that made it and I doubt they would try and pull something on you unless the friendship went sour. In which case there would likely be skype logs or stuff.

If you're worried about someone turning around and saying you plagiarized a skin, document them giving it to you willingly. If they do it over skype, you can always get those logs and pass em over. That's all it takes. If we're rather uncertain, we'll obviously err on the side of caution. Most of these situations we respond to are pretty cut and dry.

then dont use a skin somebody else made if you're worried about being muddled, mr. mojito.

Same thing applies? You can use it but you can't claim the credits for making it? It's that simple. If you didn't make it, don't say you made it. And use it with only with permission.

If it's on a thread with something like 'free to use' etc it would come under the PMC part where you'd have to explicitly state that you don't want it reused on Lord of the Craft or they need to ask permission.

Ripping skins from a player directly is one thing, taking them from a public website or thread which hosts the original skin file is different, disclaimers are key.
