Your thoughts on character journals...

Title says it all: What do you guys think about character journals? Do you enjoy reading them? Do you keep your own? Please share! I am putting together my own character's journal and was wondering all these things.

I was considering starting one for Charlotte once she is a little bit older. I haven't done character journals before so I thought it would be fun to try. Would you make a thread here on the forums or use a doc? That part I wasn't entirely sure of.

I enjoy reading them. As someone who spends a lot of time doing movie/book/character analysises I think it's very fun to get an insight into a character's thoughts, their motivations, their feelings, all that jazz.

Personally I want to try and keep a journal for an upcoming character of mine, following his quest for knowledge and sorcery, and the adversities he will face.

A character journal is a nice thing to have if you are serious about roleplaying and developing your character in a non-synthetic way.

 

IMO, if you want to truly feel that "Aegis" experience, you need to start off with a character without an identity and build them up. Writing character journals about the IRP encounters of your character, and ensuring that the journals themselves are written in clean, understandable english, is a wonderful way to truly yoke your character to the Roleplay aspect of this server and deepen their development.

 

Simultaneously, by writing such a journal, you encourage others to develop their characters, offer guidance to new players, and improve your own skill as a writer. In short, I would say that character journals are an aspect of this server that we need to see more of.

I was trying to sort that out... with the new forum, I think it's harder to put image links (if you go that route) through a series of spoilers and I just sort of gave up. Right now I'm taking screenshots of my character's in-game journals and putting them in a doc. Then I'll just link it to my character's bio thread.

I love character journals!! I have a few little diaries my child character kept when she was younger. They're hilarious for me to read. I've thought about keeping a private blog to catalog her adventures.

 

I don't think I've read anyone else's journals. I enjoy them, though. When I was a WoW role player, my server had an IC Twitter project. It was a pretty cool way to keep up up with character memories.

Personally... I don't see the point of them. From an OOC perspective. 

See the way I see it character's ICly wouldn't gain access to the information in your journal unless you went out of your way to write it into the game in a book people can find and read. 

It's in my opinion that the journal system doesn't seem to make much sense. I mean it's nice and all reading about characters but I've always made it a point not to read stuff my character by rights shouldn't know. Just so I can keep what is known IC, IC, and not meta and stuff like that. 

I just feel like if people want to write journals for people to read they should do so ICly and then drop them into the world. It's what I've been doing sometimes. Giving incite into a character but in a way that is actually has meaningful consequences within the RP world, not just in the "other world" that the forums sit in where they cannot be touched, tampered or read by any actual character IC.

I have finished one journal in-game and I'm working on a second, but it was sad for me because I wanted to share the experiences my character had, but ICly she wouldn't want anyone to read them. I was planning on releasing them into the world after she dies, but in the meantime I still want people to read them now, so I'm just taking screenshots and compiling them together for OOC readers.
