The Freelands

Greetings, everyone! Bringing you a minor update this afternoon but some of you might be quite fond of it. Two large regions have been set up on the map where players may build freely (while adhering to the server rules and guideline below, of course). Now not all of you may not like free build, but I know some of you do and I hope you enjoy this minor update! These two regions can be found in the frigid North and also just west of the Cloud Temple docks.

While the borders might be cutting it close, these freebuild regions do not extend into any prior existing regions. All builds, event areas, manors, etc. caught within the region have had their region priority bumped up so that you still can only build on them if you're a member of that specific region. These specific regions were made with the official charter map in mind.

There are a few goals we wish to accomplish with this project. First and foremost, we want to give new players a place to settle into while they adjust to the server. Telling a newly-accepted player that "no, you can't build anywhere and you can only dig and mine in one specific spot" is a bit... well, disheartening to some people. These freelands will give players new and old alike a place to settle into as they make friends, enemies, money, and a name for themselves. The second is that we wanted to see if we could revive road-roleplay a bit. As it stands, most players avoid walking the roads because you won't see anyone else and fast travels are, well, much faster. If you'll come across a variety of buildings, from farms to inns, shops to bars, you might be a bit more keen on walking the roads of Vailor instead of taking a cart or boat.

In these ‘wilds’, all normal server rules apply as well as a few additional guidelines:

  • Griefing and land-scarring will be reversed via rollback and further possible punishments may be delivered.
  • Builds that are unfinished, inactive, or are an eyesore may be removed via events or worldedit up to the GM team discretion. There’s not a whole lot of land and this is to allow everybody to have their own fair share. We’re also not asking or expecting you to remodel your house weekly to remain active, we can tell, don’t worry!
  • Large walls may not be constructed to “portion off” land for yourself. You’re everyone’s neighbor here, like it or not!
  • Likewise, these lands are not to be used as expansions for nations. These regions are intended for players new and old alike to build just like one would in the wilds of the past maps.
  • As of now, we’ll be discouraging the building of large castles and forts. This may be changed once we see how much land is being used.
  • Leaf-decay is off. Be aware of this and don't leave floating leaves!

What comes next?

Within a few days or week(s), I would also like to start unregioning parts of the road; the road is quite extensive and can you take all throughout the world… but generally you won’t see much besides cozy, quiet villages until you reach a capital city. These regions will be MUCH smaller than the wild freeland regions. They will extend 5-15 blocks away from the road and will allow players to build freely; perfect for roadside shops, taverns, farms, and vacation burrows! These regions will not be made without region owner’s consent and I will be discussing this with region owners / nation leaders in the coming days/week.

Enjoy this update, guys. Make your mark on this map while we're still here!  Also, don't forget to check out Nyxxa's resource pack contest here:

How do I know if I'm in the freebuild region?

You'll receive a message in your chatbox similar to when you enter the docks or cities like Felsen; jaMgUMZ.png

Help! I have a region that's within the freebuild borders!

Your region has been given a priority bump to protect it. If I've missed your region, please let me know and I'll fix it immediately.

Are these regions final?

They may shrink, grow, or change in shape as time goes on.

Won't this just spread roleplay out more?

Yes and no. Capitals and cities will always have the advantage of being region-protected and a roleplay hotspot. Cities have jobs, auctioneers and bankers, and a plethora of shops and roleplay options. The overall hope here is that these freebuild locations help with player retention and boost the server population numbers over time.

The purple lines run right through [my city/town/village/region]!

Those are roads.

Have fun out there,

Please don't allow ppl to build keeps here. It'll be weird for orenian nobles to wander the wilderness, find a keep and a random man that claims to own it without being nobility.

That's the plan, as of now. We want quaint cabins, edgy bandit hideouts, farmlands, halfling burrows, druidic groves, etc. versus giant fortresses and keeps dotting the landscape.

Sounds like a great idea! Bringing road rp would be great, though, i'm not sure how effective it'll be, considering that the roadside places that do already exist see little to no activity.

This seems like a very fun throwback. I know I certainly had very many fond memories in Athera in the free build area, I made my home there, and have many fond memories from my days of starting on the server. Thanks for this!

I think this is a terrible idea that will spread RP away from an already disbanding experience in RP. Although new players may not like that they can't build right away, so what? We're a RP server, not a PvP factions server, which I feel this brings us even closer to, and I'm sure we'll feel the effects of such a bad idea.

But I do like the road's, that should be fun. But for the main part, it seems just something to do while we wait for the new map, which I pray a freebuild area will not be allowed.

Edit: Also, where is the recording for the community meeting?
