St. Karlsburg City Elections

The morning of the 4th of the Deep Cold was an unforgiving one.

As the High Steward made his way into the heart of St. Karlsburg, a chilling wind swept through the streets of Haense's capital, sending the Steward's woolen cloak fluttering and dancing in unison with banners that flapped fiercely from the rooftops in the northern wind. After what felt like an age of trekking through the snow, the Steward finally mounted the wooden platform in central Karlsburg, the steps of which creaked beneath his weight, and he brandished a long sheet of parchment. He sucked in a deep breath, and called out:

"While Maer Vanir's time in office continues to bring progress and prosperity to St. Karlsburg, the time has come to prepare for the second election for the Maer of the city of St. Karlsburg. All those who seek the office, step forward now! All candidates must be a resident of the city, and announce their candidacy before the year's end."

His solemn speech was carried through the square by the wind, which strangely seemed to enhance its volume. Slowly, the Steward furled the parchment once again, and descended from the platform. As he retreated to the warmth of indoors, the city square suddenly bloomed to life with the talk of the approaching elections.

Cayleb runs across a flier while packing his things in the Karlsburg Bastille. Immediately, he pens a letter to the Steward inquiring about the timing of the election announcement, as Maer Vanir had only served a little more than half his time as Maer, and even if the winner is found before, Maer Vanir is granted his full term (February the 1st).

Cayleb smiles, receiving a letter back thanking him for correcting the error.

Lukas Vanir would hobble onto the stage, smiling at the Steward as he faces the gathered crowd.

"Let me tell you, folks, the last two-three years have been tough. We've witnessed the rise of Courland and many other smaller Kingdoms, the fall of the Empire, the loss of brothers and fathers and sons and nephews and uncles. But I tell you what, Karlsburg, the Haensetian people are tougher than that. All across this Kingdom, people like you dug in. Some of you took out the family sword that hadn't been used in years. Some of you signed up to work for the municipal office, helping us pay for our brave men in uniform. The nobility went back to serving their country both at home and in the field of battle. Yes, there were defeats. Yes, there were disappointments. But we didn't quit. We don't quit. I won't quit. Together, we're fighting our way back to the top.

Already, I've done plenty for this city. The Karlsburg Royal Brigade has doubled in size since before I took office, as has the civilian population of our fair city. The markets are back in business, with commoners and noblemen alike selling their wares for cheap, affordable prices. You entrusted me to make this city great, and I believe I've started down that road, but there is still much to do. Here, where I began this incredible journey for our city, I, Lukas Vanir, officially announce my candidacy for the Office of Maer of St. Karlsburg."

The old man would then step off the stage, headed back to the city's administrative office to get back to work.

Planted on walls throughout the city, a simple poster would be placed all around St. Karlsburg.

Good people of St. Karlsburg,

It is with a steady hand and a resolute heart that I write this letter, for all within the city to read.

I have bothered you this day to inform all of my withdrawal from the running for Maer of St. Karlsburg.

I thank any who planned on voting for the Van Loden family, though I now urge you to vote for reelection of the current Maer, Lukas Vanir.

May his rule be fair and devoid of hardship.

                                                                                                         Your Friend,

                                                                                                               Johan van Loden
