James Montoya was a man of many feats, the one he was most proud of was commanding a force against the Orenian Empire in 1594, but alas that would have been a good ten years ago. Age had hit him hard, the position of Maer would create reason for his hair to lose all brown colour only at 46 years. This was his last year in office and he moved with the Courlandic army to end the Haensetic rule in the north once and for all. He remembered his father’s stories about fighting alongside Aleksander Staunton and other great men in the infamous Riga-War.

To say the least the apple had not fallen far from the tree. History repeats itself and this time it did exactly that. When the war began he was one of the first to sign up, fighting against other cavalry in the Battle of Elba. His gold plated horse stuck out on the battlefield as he used his lances to lay waste to part of the Haensetic cavalry force, along with Jacque de Felsen and a few others. The post-battle was worse for Montoya and as his horse trotted along the bodies heading north he knew this would be his last war.

This battle begun, Montoya led a treb team, continually firing barrages into the enemy ballistas and trebuchets. As the sound of screaming echoed around the siege camp from a supposed enemy flank, he immediately left the siege camp to mount his horse and join the other cavalry in a direct attack. The barbed arrows he’d picked up from a corpse in Elba had come in handy as he fired upon the Haensetic archers peaking from the top of the fort.

He rested behind a tree, his arms exhausted from the continuous pulling of the bow string, before committing himself to one last ride and mounting his horse again. Seeing a breach open he continued to fire arrows until there were none left.

Adrenaline and nostalgia, now the only thing his mind had focused on kicked into full force, with him mounting the roof top. He terrorized the Haensetic forces for a little while, killing one with a blow of his warhammer. Eventually a young pikeman, no older even than his youngest son stuck a pike into his back from behind. It was well aimed and pushed through his armor into his heart, as he collapsed off his horse onto the floor he didn’t feel scared, or ashamed. Just joy to see his father again after all those years, he had died doing what he loved.

Ser James Montoya, son of Shayne Mauntel.

1558 - 1604

Leonhard, who is actually 30 years old, recalls the battle that he had escaped only by luck. He remembers the time from several years ago where the man only identifying himself as "James" had made a very mysterious introduction in St. Karlsburg; one which Leonhard had never followed up on. Only in battle did he see that man again, his pike being the instrument of greeting. Leonhard would never know whom he had killed. He could only feel as much regret as he did for the rest of the war, and the rest of the men he had killed.
