Of Clergy and Crown

As Oyvind Frostbeard walked up the steps of the stage, an uneasy calm flushed over the crowd. It had been mere stone days since the newly appointed Grand Marshal had taken his office, and mere days since he witnessed a disloyalty to the Grand Kingdom he had never expected to see, least of all from his own clan.

“My fellow Dwed of Urguan, I come to ye today with a heavy heart. This is sometin’ I never wanted to do, but I fear I must.”

As Oyvind looked down to his feet the crowd exchanged glances, what new Legion system had the marshal came up with now?

“Kerwyr Frostbeard is nay the loyal Dwed I thought he was. Nay even a few stone days ago I walked in on an armed altercation between Frostbeards and Ireheart. I tried to defuse the situation and hear both sides, but they would nay reason with each other. As I pieced together the story, I found that one of the Irehearts, Alden, a mere beardling was defeated in an honor duel by me very own brother, Gorum Frostbeard. The honor duel occurred due to the Irehearts disrespecting the Frostbeard clan hall.”

The crowd shuffles nervously, unsure of where Oyvind is going with his story.

“As the two sides threw around foolish insults, I tried to defuse the system by offering a resolution, a trial to take place in the eyes of the Brathmordakin, to be overseen by Morug. To both sides pity, they refused to listen to my attempts to quell the quarrel.”

Oyvind would sigh as he pauses and looks around at the gathered crowd

“This is where it gets hard for me to tell, lads. Kerwyr Frostbeard ordered me to arrest Alden Ireheart, a reason he did nay present. He insisted on waving a parchment in my face, claiming that it was my sworn duty to arrest this man in the name of his court. A just Dwed I am lads, and I will nay allow a ‘Grand Arbiter’ to sway justice in his favour, for personal gain. As Gorum raised the blunt side of his axe to smack Alden, my attempt at peace had failed.”

Nervous chatter would resonate through the crowd

“It get’s worse here, lads. Me brother Gorum wisely took his leave, agreeing to be tried by the Court of the Brathmordakin. I slung Alden over me shoulder, as I was going to take him to my office to gain his strength, where I’d be able to convince him to partake in the trial. As I was carrying him out of the arena, Kerwyr Frostbeard, mine own kin, halted me. I thought little of it, until he proclaimed me under arrest. Officer Grudgebeard was quick to respond, escorting me kindly to the courtroom.”

The crowd would erupt with the sound of voices, as Dwed conversed with each other, sharing disbelief.

“I left Kerwyr with one question as I left. ‘Where do yer loyalties lie? With the Kingdom, or with yerself, as many have so feared.’ To this question I received nay answer. I was rushed into the courtroom, my trial hastily started. I was asked if I refused Kerwyr’s orders to arrest him, knowing it was mine own duty. ‘Aye’, I said. Tis true lads, I knew my duties and I refused to do them, for one reason lads. Justice. I am a Dwed of justice, and I understand I went against the articles or Urguan, but do the articles account for when the Grand Arbiter himself is nay a Dwed of justice? Nay lads, that is why I’m making this speech. I had the right’s of it by now, aye the beardling had fouled, but more so the Frostbeards who took to assaulting him, and arresting me. I had seen Kerwyr act out against other clans often, clan halls being burnt, violent messages left behind.”

Gasps would rise from the crowd.

“Aye lads! It was him! I plead my guilt, I knew of those crimes, but I did nay speak out. How will justice be served properly lads, if the Arbiter is a criminal himself! How many times have we seen Kerwyr arrest criminals? Aye, I’m askin’ ye lads! Come on, nay one?

As the crowd looks around awkwardly, Oyvind grins and continues to talk

“There is my point lads, a Grand Arbiter who covers up his own crimes, acts against the Legion, and then suddenly uses his powers to prevent me from stopping violence. The dispute was between Clan Militaries, something I could easily settle. I sat through the farce which was the trial, then witnessed Alden sentenced to a night in prison, a fair sentence for his actions after losing an honor duel. As I followed his escort to the prison, I saw the other Ireheart who was with Alden rising, blood all over his armor! As I brought the lad back to my office, I found the truth of it, Gladund Ireheart, another mere beardling, beat down during my trial.”

Oyvind shakes his head as he lets the crowd silence after their reaction

“I will nay longer let our city suffer this lack of justice. Let all of ye bear witness, I call for the first trial of it’s kind. A trial done by the two pillars in which our Grand Kingdom runs. Something that Kerwyr Frostbeard clearly lacks. Lads, I call for a trial between Kerwyr Frostbeard and myself to take place in the Clergy Hall. The very place where our Grand King Bastion was wed, and the very place Morug prays to the Brathmordakin.

“I WILL HAVE MY QUESTION ANSWERED AT THE COURT OF CLERGY AND CROWN! WHERE DOES KERWYR’S LOYALTY LIE?”

As the crowd reacted Oyvind would nail a large scroll to the front of the platform

Trial Of Clergy and Crown:

-Two judges, the Grand King Bastion Ireheart, and the Pious Morug Goldhand.

-Each party tried will be able to give their testimony, call upon witnesses, then answer judges questions.

-All Dwed will be able to give opinion on the case, after each party has spoken.

-After each Dwed wanting to speak has been heard, the judges will decide a verdict.

-Both judges must agree on a verdict for it to pass.

-If judges are unable to agree, they must convene again to sway the other judge.

-If they are still unable to agree, each judge will honor duel.

-The winning judge surely has the right verdict, as Dungrimm has guided their axe and Yemekar their logic.

-The winning judge’s verdict will be passed.

Kerwyr Frostbeard steps forth and smiles at Oyvind.

"I pity you Oyvind for you will never know what the true extent of my love for justice is. I will stand at your trial, for I am a new Dwed, one cleansed by the prophet Aldal Ireheart, an' in the prescence uv Morug and the Brathmordakin. Let their light shine down upon as all. You are still my kin however, and I love you.  NARVAK OZ URGUAN."

Barradin listens intently to the speech, and scoffs audibly as Oyvind finishes.

"All we have here is a Dwed that openly admits to refusing to do his duties and then throws accusations in other directions to try and save his own skin. He shouts against the Grand arbiter that OUR king CHOSE to uphold the law, might i ask where Oyvinds loyalties lie?!"

"If this was too save me own skin lad I would nay call for a trial of meself. This is done so a fail safe can be established, in the case of a corrupt Grand Arbiter. My loyalties lie to the King and Clergy above all, good lad. I invite ye to come and hear the trial, and say yer piece."
