Creeping decline - Professions

This is an attempt by iMattyz to rationalise a problem I've increasingly seen while laying in a bed in mountainous Northern Sweden. Give it a read xoxo.

Since Axios starting LoTC has noticeably stagnated moreso than in previous maps. I think it is time for a fundamental change.

We need to stop thinking about crafting (blacksmithing, lumberjack, etc) as a fundamental that only brings benefits when the opposite is far more true in my view. In fact, I will argue contrary to my previous views that mechanics based professions are good, that they have halted a very important form of group RP for most people; combat groups.

These groups have always facilitated roleplay when run by competent, skillful role players. Examples include the White Rose and Old Teutonic Order. The white rose attracted a periphery of non-combat roleplayers such as Urara to name just one, who acted as a quasi-roleplay base of their own. There of are probably loads more but are outside my experience.

This kind of unique, wider RP generating order has all but disappeared, with a few rare exceptions. Why? I think it is because of grinding. Many a time I've heard promising people say “I would make an order, but I cba getting the gear”.

The leadership of many military orders has slowly transitioned from RP focused (but PvP ready) people to people who are willing to grind for the gear necessary to PvP, whereas before it was much easier, took less time and was more simple. this gave the RP oriented leader more time to actually provide RP, rather than just thinking about where the next armour set is going to come from.

Remove or rework professions. Baseline armour and weapons should be a side note and people shouldn't be able to cream others just because they grind more than they RP.

Disclaimer that I haven't been really involved in lotc for the last few months so the situation might have changed.

Agreed. Maybe, if LotC had 500-900 people playing it would be different and limiting crafting could be useful. There was a profession system in Asulon, if I recall correctly, and almost no one enjoyed it because of how hard it was to find someone with the know how and was online. Feel free to correct me however, I only recall this from the first couple of months that I was on the server. There's nothing wrong with a character who wants to be a farmer or chef, but slice of life role-play gets boring. Fighting and good villains is where it should be, and it should not be impossibly difficult to obtain the gear needed.

I mean, why do anything disruptive if you lack the recipes and highest grade gear to get away with it? It was bad enough that the server had weapons doing 2-3 extra points of damage before but with Diamond gear coming into the equation, there's no point in doing anything of note if you lack the resources to do it.

All iron, no enchants and no percentiles was by far the most entertaining PvP and the most novice / active lifestyle friendly.

We realised crafting and professions plug ins were a bad thing after Vaquxine's final disaster in early 2012. Why, 5 years later, has the problem been repeated? Does anyone know what they are doing? If Tythus wasn't always absent he would have the experience to guide the server away from this

I agree, but I would say some exceptions are to be placed down. The breeding system, in my eyes, is wonderful. The alchemy system too. Same goes for chef, although I would argue that regular bread, that actually gives some saturation, shouldn't be blocked from people. Those things aside, though, grinding gear and "hey this guy has a 2-shot weapon lmfao lolololol" or "look how strong my power II velocity 16916% infinity flame VI is!!!111!" is a bad system.

I do think professions were a lot better at the start of Vailor than they are now even. Back then, most RP groups at least had folks grinding and had gear, even the ******* elves. Hell, during the Duke's War, the high elves and wood elves were some of the best equipped people on the battlefield. Yet professions have become more complicated, with special sticks, different specialized ingots, and other nonsense I really can't be bothered to figure out. Our professions have never been easy to understand, but at least they were manageable.

Grinding is quite literally garbage for RP, and here's why.

Grinding revolves around PvP, the benefits to leveling up your grinding are PvP benefits, if I make a sweet PvP item, i'm going to want to ******* use it in PvP, It's as simple as that. If I have a 40% War axe that has Sharpness and Unbreaking II, I don't want to RP with that ****, I want to use it and **** people who don't grind with PvP. If you want grinding to remain without being a huge detriment to the server, you need to remove all PvP items from grinding.

As an aengulic blacksmith and legendary enchanter, nexus is absolute and utter trash. It has literally zero RP attached to it, please reinstate default iron armor and iron swords so we can have fun again.
