New Player Guide Ideas

Hello all!

As part of an ongoing project, the AT have been working on a comprehensive new player guide.

We’ve written up a decent amount, including lots of info on chat commands, soulstones, crp, pvp, pk/monks etc. I’m just making a quick post to ask both new and veteran players alike for common topics, mechanics and commands that new player struggle with, or anything else that would be beneficial to include in a guide. This guide will be given to all players upon acceptance, so we’d like to cover every basis necessary to adjusting and settling into lotc.

Just reply here and let me know of anything you think that should be included

Tysm!!

How voting not only helps the server but also gives them free bread daily.

I feel everyone should take a glance over the lore and ongoing of the server before joining, but I feel a lot of people would rather not do that. So some sort of abbreviated lore guide to help a player fit in a little better could be nice. This would probably be a bit of work to keep up on but keeping it semi current could help players get right into things. Stuff like nation names / locations, names rulers of nations, current ongoing issues such as wars and staff events, and other stuff could be updated semi regularly to help a player integrate into the world quicker. I’d also include a brief history of the current world if possible, mainly notable world events and the like. This could give context to a new player about a group trying to recruit them prior to joining and suddenly wondering why another player group is now actively trying to kill them. The entire thing could be like 2 pages of a google doc that is updated from time to time.

If something like this already exists then apologies, haven’t been a new player in while.

I’ve helped a lot of new players to get on the server, here’s some of the most common things that new players find trouble with upon joining the server... I can flex the fact that I have experience with this because I actually do

- How to find a place to RP at

- What is the server about

- How to get a work (YOU NEED NEXUS FOR THIS IM SORRY... if someone wants to tell me why you don’t need nexus, just quote this with arguments against this statement... I’ll burn you.)

- How to get a house

- Where to go

- Basic chat commands

- What is there to do on the server

- Who do I talk with to get a house in X place (could really use a plugin)

- How to use and what’s a soulstone

also, don’t make the guide too long or some of the people won’t read it. Keep it short, simple, straight and objective.

Nexus in Axios only promoted employment by promoting grinding. Even then, most people were only Self-Employed or produced goods for their community without personal benefits for doing so. The best way to promote jobs is to promote situations in RP that require people to be hired by others for a wage, not fluff around with crafting/grinding systems.

And for New Players, I’d love to see more role playing guides put out by the community.

A big issue is a lack of a player run market. Nations tend to create a huge monopoly on market stalls while players lack any ability to start up market stalls. Most of the time, the stalls have items that are useless or which run out within a day, players who own shops should be required to keep them stocked.

Not trying to defend the grind that was leveling up in nexus even though i dove headfirst into it, but nexus did promote tons of jobs outside of grinding. I did quick business running both a blacksmith and mining, some of it rp’d others assumed, even though I didn’t rp out every transaction, it really did help me feel like a blacksmith instead of the guy in charge of getting iron stuff. I really feel that vanilla crafting is a disservice to the player base at large.

I know this is a roleplay server at heart, but a bit of functionality around roleplay really helps bring it to life and make it feel more connected overall. The biggest thing I miss from nexus was the weight of resources, stuff was harder to make and therefore more marketable, without some sort of nexus system I don’t think the server will ever have much of an economy beyond selling iron and bread, building stuff on the new map, and the occasional rp stuff. I’d rather die than grind up again though, liked the choices and scarcity imposed by nexus not the time invested required.

Also in my opinion the biggest affront to lack of an economy to jump into at a new player level is limited creative. Popping in massive cities and forts really kills any need to buy niche blocks / materials / tools and players to gather such rarities and quantities. Luckily the new map nation system seems to be resolving this decently enough if it is implemented as advertised.

Who to contact when you have a certain issue, and how to contact them.
Sometimes we’ll have newer players come to the moderation team for every question. While we mostly don’t mind this, they can get a much more in-depth & full answer by reaching out to other teams (like the lore team or application team!)

Encourage them to join a group, city, faction, etc. Get them involved in something, other wise they’ll be stuck wandering and end up quitting. Only reason I’m still playing is because I was involved with The Crimson Edict back on Vailor.

Make sure they know to throw out any stereotypes they may think exist in the LoTC lore. Like the stereotype that all elves are good with a bow for being elves, or that this is medieval themed, and can not have items without the physical representation of them in their inventory.

I ran into a new player that literally said he had C4 on his chest if we didn’t let him escape.

Previous new player guides are great references when trying to figure out what to add to your own. There’s never too many guides!
