Drifting

[!] The beach of Brandybrook seemed to have an eerie aspect to it, for no apparently discernible reason...though, upon further inspection, a corpse would be found drifting towards shore....

-NjLj9gLnGcrhPKEH6efwJAKyEV6oOQxbh7dvbyBXSgRL1FFhYTFA80bojIz7tKamn1m3bkpTrUu5fjbPUAe6c9YFqqFLHZTFAJlHHrDSXiI1OApB11730IliLLxN3HyZA-YGZgW

The halfling woman seems to have been at sea at least for a while...her hat and crown did not accompany her body and simply floated by the Spicy Shrimp. The lass’ once bright and healthy face is sunken and greyish in color, and her expression is affixed in a smug sort of grin. Her armor is quite rusted, with kelp and seaweed wrapping around the girl’s arms, legs, and torso in places. Her wrists are bound together with frayed rope, and a wound from some sort of dagger is visible just below her throat.

A series of letters would soon be delivered by someone’s cockatiel to the following persons:

Alaric, Bryce & Jade Sunbrook, Chemi, Daerine, Deek & Pervinca Driftwood, Fay, Ilkri F., Isalie Gardner-Leafwalker, Jasper Sunbrook, Micah O’Connell, Domonic Elmoran, Rolando Applefoot, Samuel Gaia, and Taurin Leafwalker

Alaric

Spoiler

Alaric,
If you’re reading this, I’m probably dead. I know our friendship had its ups and downs...a lot of them...but I’ll be forever grateful that I always could count on you in the end. Safe travels and Arugula bless ye.

Anne

Bryce & Jade Sunbrook

Spoiler

My children,
I have no idea how to write this. But, to be blunt, I’m dead (or you guys found this note by accident, in which case I want you to burn it. You know full well where I keep the matches in this burrow). Probably not exactly the news you wanted to hear today, and I apologize for that. I’ll always be watching over you from whatever afterlife I end up in. Know that I always wish the best for you. May the winds bless your sails, wherever you go.

P.S. There’s a lockbox somewhere in this burrow with treasure in it. The key is stashed under my bed. Split the contents of the lockbox evenly amongst yourselves if you find it. Good luck!

Anne

Chemi & Rolando

Spoiler

Auntie Chemi and Uncle Rolando,

Alrighty, time to get all the sappy stuff out of the way. First things first, I’m dead. Second things second, I’m gonna miss you two, yaknow? You guys were sort of my first ever caretakers who really cared about me (other than Mum and Pa), and...well, I really appreciate it. I’m really bad at writing these letters. Sorry. Love you.

Anne

P.S. Adding this years after the first part. AUNTIE CHEMI, UNCLE ROLANDO IS IN LOVE WITH YOU. I BELIEVE IN YOU, ROLANDO.

Daerine

Spoiler

To my honorary big sister,

So, looks like I’m dead. Oops. Might be my fault. Might not be. Anyways, I wanted to say thank you for effectively being the big sister I never got to have throughout most of my life. Wouldn’t have rather had any other big sis.

Anne

Deek & Pervinca Driftwood

Spoiler

To my parents,

Hi, guys. I’m dead. I know that we haven’t really gotten along all that well, but...all sarcasm and joking aside, I really do love you both. And I really am dead. You can go check, probably. Though both of you have your flaws--as do I!--I really shouldn’t have treated you as poorly as I did sometimes, and for that I apologize.
That being said, if you don’t care about me dying, then you can safely disregard all that sentimental crap.

Anne

Fay

Spoiler

To Fay, one of my closest friends,

Super nervous about this one. Here goes. I’m dead, and...I know you always said it was alright and not my fault, but...I’m still sorry. For everything. Thank you for giving me another chance, and being a wonderful friend.

Anne

Ilkri F.

Spoiler

To my Ma,

Hey. No easy way to say this, but unless you tore this out from under my floorboards, I’m 99% sure I died. Shame, really. I would have liked to spend more time with you than I did, but nevertheless, I extend you my thanks for putting up with me and taking care of me when anxiety and fear really had me, and for being my Ma. Be safe and happy.

Anne

Incadence

Spoiler

To my Mom,

Not really sure how to put this, but, unfortunately, either you’re REALLY good at finding things I’ve hidden, or I’m dead. Probably the latter. I want to thank you for all that you’ve done for me. Always being there for me, and brightening my life all that much more. I love you.

Anne

Isalie Gardner-Leafwalker

Spoiler

To my best friend, and deputy,

Howdy howdy. Unfortunately, I’m dead. That makes YOU the new sheriff. Enjoy the career. And let me tell you--it gets annoying to have everyone complain to you, yet, somehow, it is really nice when you help people. It’s weird. I dunno, maybe that’s just me who feels that way. You’re too sweet to get annoyed with people...okay, I’m rambling. But, seriously. You’re my best friend. I wish you all the best, as you deserve.

Anne

Jasper Sunbrook

Spoiler

To my lovely husband,

Probably either the hardest or second hardest letter to write. I’d wager you already know about this, but surprise, I’m dead. I’m really sorry. About all the times that I’ve just been confusing, difficult to care for, or have just straight-up disappeared with no trace. I couldn’t ask for a better husband--or a more patient one for that matter. Stars guide your path from here.

Anne

P.S. I won’t be upset if you remarry, as long as they’re hot.

Micah O’Connell

Spoiler

To the Thain of Brandybrook,

I’m likely dead. No easy way to put that. But, thank you for tempering my craziness from time to time, and genuinely being a wonderful friend and leader. You’re the best Thain ever.

Anne

P.S. Make my current deputy the sheriff. I’m sure they’ll pick a good deputy. I am very smart, after all. I’d only pick the best deputy to succeed me.

Domonic Elmoran

Spoiler

To Cpt. Domonic Elmoran,

Presuming this letter has made its way to you, I died. Did I die while on duty? That would have been an...interesting way to go. No matter how I died, I’m glad that I had the opportunity to work under you and help people, even if it was only for a tiny bit as of the day I’m writing this. Fight well.

Anne

Samuel Gaia

Spoiler

To the brother of Rosemary,

I’m dead. I want to say that I’m sorry for dying on you before we could really get to know one another. I’m sure you’re great, and I hope the best for you growing up & in the future. I’ll give you two hundred mina in the afterlife (if I can) if you survive longer than I did. Fifty years or so. Beat that!

Anne

Anne

Taurin Leafwalker

Spoiler

I’m dead. No easy way to say that. I wanted to say thank you for being a good friend. I don’t really have anything sappy or smart or wise to say here, so...guess I’ll end this here. Be safe.

Anne

P.S. I still haven’t forgotten when you mistook my then-boyfriend for a woman. Maybe you need glasses. Mine are probably still lying about somewhere in the village if you’d like to try ‘em on. Knox knows you’d benefit from doing so!

A sense of dread still lingered by Brandybrook’s shore and the docked ship so long as the corpse drifted there within the tides...

Jade cries out in pure agony, stomping the floor and sprinting into the burrow to dig her head into the couch. Many moments would pass as the young halfling would remain motionless, though suddenly, she’d rise up- ripping the couch cushions to shreds and throwing them all over the burrow, smashing lots of glass and destroying the kitchen. “MA- M- MOM!!!! she’d squeal, throwing a fit and bursting into tears even further.

Over the next few days, weeks, perhaps even months- Jade would not be seen again to anyone...

My sweet sweet, Child.”

Spoiler

The halfling has noted her daughter's body in front of her, no letter was received. a hate-filled visage wavered over her odd features. "Anne -...?" The woman barked out, clearly didn't expect such news  in front of her line of sight She had returned after a long time, had decided to see her daughter, once again. Though ... she succeed to see her, even if in such dormant status. "My daughter-What have i done -... I ..." Sorrow exploded from all corners of the former dark mage;wrath, hatred. Negative emotion were the only clear thing onto Maya. A hand stretched out to tear the younger halfling's hat off her head, and she'd lay it on her own. Prayers ran away from her lips, but they were more akin to a cry, she pulled out her PROPER halfling shovel, detaching it from her belt and she'd start to work on the grave. "I return, and chaos is spread again unto this world. Why ... why have i this curse. Why have you taken her away from me?! Is this a punishement?!"  The last fragment that managed to keep the sanity of the old dark creature balanced, was now dead. There was nothing more that could keep her away from such dark path she had sworn never to return.  Anne is dead. So also a part of Maya.  “Ah... my sweet, Child. You’re sleeping, Let mama prepare the- bed... and hum you a lullaby, Ja-... do let me...for the last time” she’d hum out a soft tune, as she did all of this. Clearly the edge was  overcame.

Deek Driftwood sits blindly on the Docks of Brandybrook, though not truely blind, given the blessing of Arugula upon him, he could see nothing in his grief. Though no tears spill from those hollow sockets, miserable sniffing would be heard.

Samuel Gaia stood up teary-eyed and red in his face after just having been in a fight with his friend. As he wandered over the docks and holding tight onto the purple engraved wedding ring of his ancestor then noticing the body on the beach.
The fourteen year-old just looked at it from a distance at first before looking around him and then running over as if he was set on automatic.

“Crap!” He said to himself before placing his hands on the body to assist the individual before noticing how cold it was.
“Wait-“ He looked it over once more, then moving up towards it’s head to remove some of the kelp and seaweed that covered it’s face. Once done he just stared and stared, feeling as though time had frozen for him only then realizing who it was. “Anne?” He called out, the reality of the situation still not having hit him. “ANNE?!” He shouted at the top of his lungs, his breathing quickening and tears beginning to flow down his cheeks. “No-“  He shook his head. “This is not happening.” He continued as he just stumbled backwards and fell back down in the sand more and more tears coming as he saw what felt to be the last fragment of his family deceased. “Give her BACK!” He screamed for anyone to hear, then going over the body again and beginning to tear away and remaining kelp or seaweed still on the body.
“Please.” He lied back down and hugged the corpse with both his arms before standing up and stumbling away while bawling his eyes out, leaving her there.

Isalie tends to the body long before she reads any letters. When she first saw her, Anne, an icy coldness ran throughout her body. She feels numb. Her best friend was dead, seemingly tortured first and then thrown out into the sea. Seeing how she was murdered, only one suspect comes to mind. Rollina. Isalie is by no means a violent person, but rage courses through her.

Only after receiving the letter does she cry for the first time. She doesnt know when Anne wrote this, but to hear her friends last thoughts makes this all the more real. Isalie breaks down into violent sobs, holding herself. Why did she go it alone? Wasnt Isalie the deputy, her partner? Why had she never come to her for help? Stupid stupid STUPID. She sits in her own sorrow for what feels like hours, before cold resolve takes over. Isalie was going to find Rollina, and end this.

Looking up to the sky to whatever god there was, Isalie makes a vow “Ah dunnae whos up thar, bu’ yeh’ve taken tha bes’ o’ us. An’ now, yeh owe us. Curse tha’ Rollina! Curse ‘er so tha’ she knows ‘er croime, an’ tha’ she’s go’ ‘ell ta pay!”

Jasper sits in silence for a minute, saying nothing. Finally, he speaks. “Anne...Oi’m so sorreh...” He reaches out and lays his hand on her shoulder, then begins to sob. He's sobbing so much, he's shaking. While he sobs, he apologizes over and over again like a broken record. He calms down enough to read the letter left for him, then kisses the body on the forehead before walking home. He tries to comfort Jade and Bryce the best he can, but he's incredibly upset himself. When Jade disappears, he spends all his time at the docks, staring out into the water, as if he's contemplating joining Anne and throwing himself in. At some point he removes his wedding bands and puts them on a necklace, and he never takes the necklace off. If anyone were to try and talk to him while sitting at the docks, except maybe Bryce, he wouldn't say anything.

Sean bows his head, paying respects to his friend, “See ya in hell, Anne.” He chuckled, holding back tears. This hit the Halfling hard. Time to drink away his problems.

Alaric sat by the pond of a Manor, tears running down from his amber eyes, his hands clasped together. He gazed through his blurred vision and into his reflection from the pond, silently muttering to himself. ”Ah’ll miss ye, Anne” The Small Being said with a heavy heart ”Thank ye, so much, for bein’ there”He said, stumbling to his feet, his head lowered as he trudged back inside, dreary. One of the most important people in his life was gone, one of the best friends he ever had, and one he had known since he was a child.

The Thain of Brandybrook would not be seen for some days after Anne’s passing.

He spent these hours conscious, unaccompanied, inebriated- unable process the death of the late Sheriff and his dear friend.

What could have happened? Who could have done this? He would ponder these questions, though in his befuddled state he struggled to find any answers. They kept repeating in his mind...
She was still only young...

Would be his final thought, as he threw back a last shot of whisky that would ultimately cause him to black out.

Pelegren was positively catatonic upon hearing the news. Similarly to Micah, he disappeared briefly, spending several days sitting in his burrow on the hunt for the bottom of a bottle of whiskey.

Taurin, upon seeing the body, would stumble backwards on the sand, landing with a loud thud. Very quickly, he’d get up and run to his burrow. There’d he’d sit, collecting his thoughts, before his letter arrived. As he read through the letter, he would feel the prick of tears, although he’d smile at the advice given. He’d sit there for a while, in the faint light of the fading sun. Soon he’d put the letter down, wipe the remaining tears away and stand up. ”This can’t happen again.” He’d leave the burrow and make for the tavern. ”I won’t let it.”

The piercing shriek of the eldritch uncle to Anne could be heard flying throughout the entire landscape of Brandybrook. As he walks the distorted mana within his form subverts the ground below him, and within his path he lets out screams within the abyssal moonspeech of the void. His figure turned and morphed into something that could be seen as more of a monster than descendant-like by this point. The last shred of his heart shattered, the man known as Rolando lives only for one simple purpose by this point, to tear the ground asunder and bring the person whom murdered Anne asunder into the void to get ripped apart.

The familiar dainty form of a peach-colored woman looks about. Her form shaking as she coughs up. Limping a bit the woman seems to seeth with anger at the notice of Anne’s death. “’he untintellegen’ garbage cabbage-patch babeh deserved i’.. onleh a mattah o’ toime before ‘he trash o’ Brandehbrook are all refined.. soon, we’ll ‘ave a propah village once more..” the woman says, laying within a bath... Dark red beginning to fill up the waters.
