Breakthrough: Alchemical Flight Discovered

An old alchemist with a failed design.

Long has man looked up to the skies and wished to have their feet swept from the ground. Many have attempted this feeling, whether it be with failed inventions, balloons, or drugs, none have succeeded to the level which I have today. 

 

I, Tylos - Court Alchemist of the Aster Court - am pleased to announce that I have developed a personal hover device that allows the user to levitate one foot above the ground, whether this be over water or land. Movement is stable and secure and the device shows little sign of malfunction. Via various alchemical procedures, I have formulated a one-of-a-kind crystal that powers such a thing, allowing for internal combustion which is then routed through two tubes at the bottom. This device may be worn as a backpack, though there are plans to improve upon the design in the future. 

 

There seem to be no downsides to such a machine yet, and the smoke produced seems to not harm nearby plants, though this is merely a suspicion. I look forward to presenting this invention to the courts soon with a public viewing event - cementing my legacy in stone as one of the greatest alchemists, for I have broken through previously impossible barriers.

But, then she concocted her own version of it, and set about putting a few odds and ends together. The next day, she ended up accidentally injuring (and nearly drowning) some poor volunteer by launching him out of a small, purpose-built catapult off the Varhelm docks and into Lake Eada. Unfortunately, the glider she had strapped to the man's back did nearly nothing to break his fall, let alone bear him to the opposite shore.
