A mother, a daughter, a sister, a woman of faith.

unknown.png

In her last days, a wave of nostalgia would overwhelm the weathered woman. Her memories of growing up with her first family, meeting her father, catching Azzam from the trees, teaching Zahra to bake, Saalih and Zaina’s terrifying desert adventures, the formation of the bakery with her sister, those early days so far lost. The birth of Mehreen, her beloved daughter, and how they faced life together. How the two, always hand in hand, faced a dark, unforgiving world. The constant chaos and fear that followed a harsh life in the desert. The loss of those she loved, Matilda, Hassan, Thamer, and yet, she and her daughter persisted.

Amidst chaos and confusion, Allah’s light continued to shine through. All the days spent in the Masjid, Mehreen by her side always. Her union with her husband, Murad, an incredible gift Allah had given her. Fatimah, her beloved niece, was brought into the world. The birth of her twin boys, sweet Maalik and Matin. The expansion of her family, ushered by the most thoughtful man she’d ever met, her husband. She always marveled at the fact that she was able to experience such provision, love, and compassion in her lifetime.

In her final moments, as she felt her body succumb to the harsh desert winds, Marah thought of her husband, her beautiful husband, Murad. The quiet moments spent in the gardens, baking and climbing shelves together, the time with their beautiful children. Her children. Each of them flashed through her mind, as if they passed through a veil she couldn’t follow. Mehreen, Aila, Maalik, Matin, Amina, Zuma, Shams, Qamar, all of the children she cared for so deeply, gone. Their charming smiles, their gentle spirits, their love for adventure, all passed with them. Yet she remained where she stood. A quiet moment of pride and heartbreak. Her children’s admirable strength, unfortunately, accompanied by their own mortality, (in contrast to her fading mortality).

An overwhelming cold surrounded her. Though the slightest light remained as she saw her father’s tender face. The first person she met as she entered their lush oasis, who helped her as she stumbled upon their home. His benign face greeted her, whispering a word of faith, before leaving her behind as he too passed through the vail.

And so she remained, alone once more. As she entered the Oasis, she would leave again, alone. All of her family, the Hattans, Hamads, Ulamahs, and Hadads, her dear friends, Matilda, Diana, Joseph, Philippa, Aylin, Daibibdh, Nin, Rosa, none were with her.

As this terrifying cold continued to engulf her, there was a moment of levity and light. Zahra. As Marah prepared to enter paradise, in shaa allah, her sister would be there waiting. Reunited once more, their hands would interlock. She’d give her sister’s hand a small squeeze, the symbol of their resilient sisterly bond, one that would never fade. This quiet moment, reunited with the one she loved most, brought a peace that surpassed all understanding. Her sister, her beautiful sister, had passed on, her family prevailing. Marah knew she could pass on without worry, as her sister did. Death is just a doorway to eternity, and now Marah could pass through peacefully.

As she drew her final breath, she whispered “اغفر لي الله ، إينا لله وإنا عليه راجعون” (Forgive me, God, we belong to God and to Him, we shall return). And with that, Marah had passed on to Jannah, In Shaa Allah.

Rosalind Vildr sat in the bakery of an oasis in the south, idly sipping from a bottle with the corpse of a dear friend beside her. Too unsure of where to go next, all she could do was drink and let herself get lost in thought, with Marah finally at peace by her side.

Diana Vuiller would of held the missive in her shaky hands.

“Marah.. you were the first person I met from the Oasis.. look how much you and I have grown. I wish we could of spoken more… but that is what we all wish when someone passes. I hope you rest well with GOD. If not for you, I would of not known of the beautiful place known as this Sultunate now. Truly, you are a diamond in the rough, my old friend. You are a role model for all, and shall the new generation keep your name in their mind and heart. Shall you guide your past home and look over me and my family… truly, I wish I could of thanked you in person… for everything…”

The Viscountess would of let some tears fall from her face as she finished speaking. The woman would of gone to the manor of Azor to spread the news to Joseph.

”Joseph… our old friend..”

Fatimah al-Hadad returned home from one of her long treks in the wilderness, which she'd come to take more and more frequently these days. She was weary, tired and thirsty from the journey, yet ready to welcome her family upon her return. Yet she would not come home to a warm, blissful Oasis; there was instead a shadow that lingered over it, a unsurmountable heaviness in the air. Leaving Bubba at the entrance, Fatimah moved into the tribal city, searching for answers - and was met with despair.

Upon hearing the news of Marah's death, Fatimah stared in disbelief. Marah had been her mother figure after her own had passed, one of the first to welcome her back that day she'd wandered in from the wilderness. Marah's teachings, her warmth, her generosity - gone? It was impossible to believe, yet the aching hole in Fatimah's heart told the woman it was true. Her throat closed; unable to utter another word, she turned to disappear into the desert once more for three days' time of fasting and mourning.

And as Marah entered into Jannah by the grace of Allah, Zahra bint Hakim al-Hattan was there to welcome her with open arms, to squeeze her hand in greeting and return that ever-present symbol of sisterly love and devotion that surpassed even death itself into eternity.

A bloodcurdling scream can be heard in the Oasis, as Mehreen Al-Hattan learns of her mother's death. She rushed to Marah's side, trying to make sense of the unthinkable. Throughout everything, her mother had always been there, they walked into the unknown together and found themselves stronger than ever.

And yet, there was this crippling feeling building in her chest, a feeling of utter loss that she had never felt before. Even when her father and Amu Thamer had passed, she had never felt so utterly alone than she did at this moment, looking down at her mother's still body.

She bent over Marah, her tears falling onto her mother's peaceful, yet painfully still, visage. Her hand found Marah's cheek, and she touched her forehead against the cool surface of her mother's forehead. It was there that she uttered a soft prayer to her mother, "أمي إن شاء الله ستجدين السلام والسعادة في الجنة. سنرى بعضنا البعض مرة أخرى ، يوما ما." (My dear mother, God willing you find peace and happiness in heaven. We'll see each other again, someday).

"I love you Ummi… forever and always."

The Duke of Azor shook his head as his sister relayed his news over breakfast. "A horrible shame...." Joseph drew his breath long as he remembered the found times of his youth in the Oasis and many memories made there. "She truly was one of the good ones Diana, an incredible person, perhaps we will meet our old friend in the seven skies one of these days...."

Zuma Al-Hamad let’s out a cry, much like a scream when hearing of her mother’s passing, she clutches her chest and stares at the water edge, “May Allah keep you safe now..” She whispers before pulling herself up, determined to continue on for the only mother-figure she had.

Somewhere in a small room, far away from the Oasis, an old warrior read the missive. Despite his anger, his hatred and his disgust for his past and his people, he still had to remove a small tear from his eye. "May God take good care of you, Marah" Spoke the man soft, remembering all her lessons, all her motherly characteristics and all the time she had saved him from a terrible faith.
