Mina Sinks: Making Mina Worth Something?

Hi all, Slorbin here.

I want to discuss the state of the economy. Not the current economy, but just the overall cycle.

There is always a cycle - The server starts, Mina is worthwhile for a tiny period as nations are trying to not instantly collapse and no one has anything - but then people keep voting, and the economy never really loses that much cash. Sure, there are taxes on tile upkeep - but this is a non-issue for the majority of players, who really only need to pay around 20-30 mina a week to live in a fairly luxurious house - if even that.

The solution is not to make taxes higher, as while this may make money drain as fast from the economy as it is created, it is not particularly fun. No one really likes paying their taxes.

People want to make real purchases with their money, but the problem is that all the interesting and expensive purchases are player-to-player. The money just moves in a circular. It is very rarely pulled out, but very frequently poured in - At least 2300 minas per day.

Unlike your average MMO where you might have a mildly deflationary effect giving gold to a potion-selling NPC or whatnot, removing such currency from the economy, we do not have a significant NPC shop. The CT has a few things that the average player may want, and these are on the right track, but these items - Aesop's Architects, blocks, etc. - are too permanent.

What we need is:

An item that nearly everyone wants to have.

It should only be able to be obtained from an admin-run shop, so that mina must be destroyed to obtain the item.

It should be not be an indestructible item - it must have some way of being used up outside of freak accidents (not used up by a dragon breathing fire upon you and melting said item, but instead by something else - maybe it has a limited number of uses, or some sort of durability).

Finally, it must be expensive, so it removes enough from the economy to detract 

Lockpicks were a great idea - but not everyone really needed a lockpick: the price was simply too low, and now they can be crafted by anyone.

 

There is only one solution:
 

SELL ELYTRAS FOR 10K MINA BABY

Or, provide your actual thoughts on what could be an effective, interesting money sink in the comments.

Secret alternative real solution:

Sell Soulbinds for mina, not for cash. This makes the server not P2W.

Bring back the auction house and slap a 0.5% listing, 2% transaction fee on it.

 

Observe the economy and if minae inflate, put some freshly created ST items in the auction house.

Elytras were the single biggest piece of overpowered gear during the final days of nexus. I agree with your idea overall, that some valuable mina sinks would be good at taking money out of the server, but making the sinks powerful pvp items will completely break pvp and any hope of balancing combat.

 

IMO, the best mina sink would be a shop that sells st materials, especially ones that are no longer obtainable through events, but st will never go for that.

The elytra thing is kind of a joke, that's why my real suggestion was Soulbinds - because it removes a large p2w aspect from the server. If soulbound items could then be used in combat, they would be eaten up quite a lot quicker I'd imagine.

ST mats would be a start, but I think some weird ST mat exclusive to the CT might be a neat idea. Like. Cashium or something. Some weird material.

I also think we need to shift mina gain away from voting... but I don't know how tbh. We would also need more ways to incentivize voting if that were the case, since voting is a sincere reason for growth.

Edit tokens for voting daily instead, maybe? Keep the rewards as well?

I brought up FRP's weapon skin lootcrate system in OOC. That was a big reason for maintaining your vote milestone on there, you got a new crate for your weapon skin every 7 days or so. Plus, it's completely cosmetic, so selling the crates was a good revenue stream... Way less P2W than soulbinds.

They were also talking about shulker boxes in OOC. That could be nice, backpack items.

Economy has always been difficult. 

 

I don't know if the banks actually charge mina now or not. If not, make it work.

Auction house with percentage cut from sales/charge per listed item.

Do the same with autoshops.

Cut down the amount of autoshops vips get. 8 for aether is way too many, imo.

Charge for npcs.

Set up cost for LCs. 

 

Silly little bits of mina that mean nothing if you don't use the services, but are likely hardly noticed if you do.

 

Maybe even cut down the amount of mina we get from voting. Replace it with more free bread. God knows I need food more than I need mina rn.

making auction houses LOCAL instead of GLOBAL would ALSO be alright.

if there isn't already, add like a 1-3% tax whenever selling something from auction house. Think that would fight inflation much better than whatever the cloud temple bank tax is doing rn, since the amount of mina lost globally is directly based off of how many transactions are being made.

ST items being put by the ST on the auction house sounds slippery but TBH probably a really good way to remove mina from the economy. I think so we don't have an overinflation of ST mats themselves, the items should be kinda destructable... Frost salts, low-density boomsteel bombs, stuff like that
