@Jistuma, Not because I disagree but because I would like you to think clearly about what your implying. "Unless this falls into an exception"

Your saying I could play my Oracle with magic, because as it is currently it has no combat abilities. At what line do we divide advantage? Such is the case with Domestic magic, it however is meant to be underpowered so any use you would gain while tossing a mixing spoon at an opponent is negated by the effort it would require.

Another example would be the Wisps I gave to characters as part of the ending of Aegis event "Assuming any are still alive" They would be old enough now to communicate with them, and learn OOC information the wisps had learned but their characters would not have.

This was the slippery slope that lead to the creation of restrictions and the LM we have currently. Player lore eventually leads down one of two paths, Disciplinary action against the player if taken to far, or server acceptance.

Many Wizards befell the Hammer of bans in Aegis, However do to popularity and how well it was enjoyed in RP Lich's remained. This would be a good example.

In my opinion, the idea of trusting the players to handle lore themselves is quite interesting, and I feel it would be the best option. However, I do not believe that half of the LotC community is ready for such a change to the way fighting and lore items work. Why, just the other day, I had a lore approved item, made legitimately in roleplay, which I really wanted to use. He denounced this item, demanding for the lore. Me, being the lazy sun of a gun I am, didn't want to go rooting around on the interwebz for my lore, so I just decided not to use it, and was a bit sad. This could all be avoided with a strong, educated community, with more strict rules on overpowered lore. This was my opinion, begin sending hate mail at your leisure.

Might I offer a suggestion? Go find that lore now and put the link in your signature. That way you can just find any of your posts and pullu p that link. That's what I do with my VA's and MA's :3

Why I think this is great:

  • Prevents players from godmoding in OOC by demanding lore for trivial things.
  • Allows for more diversity in creatures, players, technology, combat, monsters, and magic(?)
  • Allows Player 1, who wants to have some MacGuffin to have said item without writing an essay, and Player 2, who doesn't want random MacGuffins to flood everywhere, to receive some assurance of restriction.
  • Lightens the load on the Lore Team; lightens the load on the players.
  • Allows me to play a creature without rifling through 800 lore posts to see if there's something contradicting.

I believe this could be a good idea. How about a plugin that allows you to /modreq the lore team? We could ask the lore team "Hey can I make a new kind of la de de de de da if you watch me rp making it, showing it, however it applies" If it's simple lore like a new kind of wood carving, no need to do that, but a new kind of smithing, or new creatures perhaps. All major lore would make a post, which would be unlocked by the lore team. The creator would give us a short explanation to the lore, and all MAJOR lore could be found on the forums, while minor lore would be found through rp.

Ideas?

That's the problem with the lore system. It's not some high and mighty lore overlords ruining your fun, it's players like the one you describe using the lore system to their IC advantage. The lore regulations aren't very restrictive (look at the reg thread to see just how loose they are nowadays), but people will lie to your face that they are in order to gain an advantage over you, and that is why this myth persists.

No no no....

But.

I think we need to be a lot more restrictive on what gets in. Also before somebody makes a lore post they should have a few pms with the lt to ask about it.

Also, what else DOES the lore team do?

There should be a rule against players halting RP for any sort of rule breaking. I have always adopted the "Go with it, and explain it as some mysterious force, or unknown magic. You should never stop with something like....."Lets get a GM or LM to approve this" It takes the fun out of the RP. This is Lord of the Craft, Not Lord of the Rules. Where the "Craft" is the story.

If a book had to pause every 2min for a rule check, or GM ruling it would be a terrible disaster.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. As I gave the example of people halting rp to see lore for my item, I would have really likes to roleplay with my new toy. This is what it should be like. RP first, complaints after. (Or just leave complaints to yourself.)

The Lore Team shall go back to its original purpose of, rather than reading lore for the server, writing lore for it.

Genius

I was for this, until I realized that the staff intends to effectively deregulate lore. There's a reason you need a proposal to make creatures and magic. This is going to end up silly, hyper unrealistic, and, frankly, edgy. I don't want to RP with some half-donkey half-bird that poops on my face. Further, this will undoubtedly result in significant PG, despite attempts to prevent it.

Less silliness, more canon lore please.

If this is going to happen, I'd hope that staff properly regulates player-created-lore to the degree that my fears will not become a reality.
