The Death of Morgrim Grandaxe

Morgrim let out a heavy gasp of air as he stood amongst the midst of a dense pine forest, the moon illuminating the branches and leaves around him. He stood quietly, rubbing his hands together as his red beard drooped down over the black cross emblazoned across his tabard. Once again, he was to reconvene with the creator upon the highest peak above Kal'Azgoth. His journey had brought him far from his new found home in Kreuzberg. Yet as he dug his iron boots deep into the snow, he looked up towards the night sky, his attention seemingly drawn away from the task at hand. He could hear in the distance, a  strange sound, hushed and soothing to his ears. There were voices in the wind, almost in song, calling out for his name. He made a quick glance into the darkness, directly to where the sounds were resonating from. The gaping mouth of a cave stood before him, a deep blackness filled within. Taking a small metallic lighter from his satchel, Morgrim twisted at its mechanism until a dim flame begun to form, flickering in the darkness. Without a second thought, he continued to make his way inside.

The dwarf stared into the cavernous depths that stretched before him, as the voices echoed from deep within the darkness, trailing down into the vast expanse of tunnels. He lifted himself down the rugged pass, taking care not to trip or lose his footing. As he reached the ground, a sudden gust of wind passed by, extinguishing the flame. The voices had faded and for that moment, all fell to silence. In its place, a dull hum begun to sound, growing louder and more frequent as every moment passed. He twisted at the lighter with his stubby fingers  but to no avail, as the hum grew to encompass him. What was causing the sound however, remained seemingly illusive. The dwarf turned frantically towards the way he had entered, his movement hastening as he tried to clamber back up the rock face. A cold shiver crept up his spine, dark and ominous. It was too late. In that instant, he felt a sudden movement grasp at his legs as a great force pulled him backwards. Voices and whispers tore at his mind as he made impact with the ground. Though he yelled out in desperation, there were none to hear his cries.

As he was dragged along the frozen ground, images of his past flashed before his eyes. He was born over three hundred years ago, a member of the mighty Grandaxe Clan of northern Aegis, a mountainous and rough climate for all who dared venture there. Amongst those peaks stood the great hold of Kal’Domhain. Its walls reached high amongst the clouds, a marvel for all who looked upon them. Those dwarves who resided there were well renowned for both their hospitality to wanderers but also their fierceness in the art of battle. The community begun small, growing steadily over the years as younger clans sought protection and shelter there. In the day, the dwarves of the mountain would labour and toil away in an effort to sustain life within the hold, while at night, they would feast and celebrate the day’s work within their great mead halls. Ale barrels were emptied and songs were sung by all, comprised largely of retellings of the actions of ancient dwarves who had sacrificed their own lives in battle for the greater good of their kin.

He had only ever sought to serve his clan and his kin. He wondered however whether he had stood true to the path his father had set him upon. He remembered all of those he had come to trust throughout his life. From the days he had returned to Kjell’s Empire of Urguan, to the great wars with the orcs and the conflicts with House Flay. Finally, he had served as a Lord upon the council of Thorin’s Grand Kingdom of Urguan, advising him upon matters in the aftermath of the collapse of the Holy Oren Empire. He took no effort in remembering it all.  It was then that his eyes opened and he reawakened, lying within a frozen enclosing, as the cold air brushed against his skin. A large creature, dark and fearsome to behold loomed over him.

His body was broken and as he lay before the hulking beast, a single drop of blood slowly slid down from his forehead, along the side of his cold cheeks. The beast’s head moved aside his own. He could feel its breath against his flesh as it yearned for his very being. Morgrim tried to move his hand for his axe but found his arm pressured under the sheer weight of the creature. He looked deep into its eyes and saw its inner torment. For darkness was not the path it had chosen to follow. With those thoughts, his vision begun to fade. Space and time flashed before his eyes as the entire universe unfolded out before him. His mind was no longer within the mortal form he had left behind. He felt a lightness to his body, as  if he were suspended among the stars.

When he awoke, he was no longer where he had once lay. He looked around the empty hall as braziers flickered in the darkness, gently illuminating the carvings on the walls. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a single figure standing above him, his white beard hanging low over his chest. Morgrim looked up into his father’s face, a warm smile forming beneath his beard. At last, he had found peace.

OOC:

Well, it’s been a long time coming but having taken various breaks throughout Anthos, I think it’s about time to admit the server has lost the spark it once held for me. I realise now I’ve mostly been playing out of of an old nostalgia from the last two years or so, and while I’ve certainly enjoyed being here these past months, it hasn’t been quite the same as it once was. On top of other real life responsibilities, I've come to realise I don’t have the time for the server as I once did. LotC requires far too much work and dedication than I can currently afford to give. With that all said, I’ve decided to take my final leave.

I feel this is a better time than any to bring closure to a character I’ve played since mid Asulon. The Grandaxe Clan and the Articles of Urguan threads can be taken over by whoever wishes to do so.

Finally, here’s a few words to those I’ve grown to respect over the time I’ve been here.

Newer Dwarves - When I was around, you guys took a lot of flak for what you were doing to try to keep the dwarves active again. I hope you can continue to strive towards what you’d like to eventually see them become. Make sure to follow the culture and focus particularly on generally role playing within the city. As before, I encourage you to go with the Markarth idea in 4.0 for the reasons I listed in the suggestion thread. Best of luck to you all for the future.

Older Dwarves - You really made the server what it was for me and I probably wouldn’t have stayed around for this long if it weren’t for you all. Thanks for making LotC what is was and I hope one day, we can all play some M&B games again. Those of you who still remain on the server, I wish you all the best in bringing the dwarves to their former glory.

House Flay/Blackmont - Aside from the dwarves, I stuck with you most while playing LotC. To those newer Flays who try to follow after Coaster’s legacy, I encourage you to think about where you want to be in a few months time. Coaster may have been known for pissing people off sometimes but he also earned their respect and did his own thing regardless of what anybody told him. To those who still remain, I encourage you to be yourselves and try to bring something new to the server.

The Teutonic Order - I spent most of my time opposed to you in character and for a while, really just wondered what you were all like OOCly. As it turns out, you weren’t all too different to any of the Flays or White Roses I knew. A lot of factions on the server seem to hold these negative opinions of one another and never really get the chance to get along and talk OOCly. Though I only spent a small amount of time with you, role playing in the TO was great fun. Best of luck to you all in rebuilding the Teutonic Order and I hope you meet your aspirations for 4.0.

Orcs - Again, another faction I spent most of my time opposed to in character. For a long time, dwarves and orcs just kept to their own corner of the server and had fun fighting each other. Without orcish RP, I don’t think I’d have enjoyed my time as a dwarf quite nearly as much. You guys certainly have my respect.

Humans - I’ve always been one for more high fantasy, Tolkienesque forms of role play though I admire that so many of you take your RP so seriously. I hope that with what Cracker and the other Carrions have done, you can bring yourselves to the stage you’d like to be at.

Elves - It’s good to see you’re starting to get more involved in nation politics once again and I personally hope you can eventually grow enough to a point at which you’ll be more like you were under Native’s rule with the Wardens. Anyway until then, good luck in your peaceful, non-pvp orientated forms of role play. I’ve never been into that all too much but each to their own I suppose.

Vekrus and the other Oren rebels - I’ve always believed that every IC rivalry or dislike should be handled in character so despite what some are saying, I think it’s good to see you’re doing something you enjoy and has seemingly caused a lot of RP to go around as a result. No matter who wins the war, I hope a point can be reached at which both rebels and Carrions are still enjoying their time on the server.

Goldrim, Aradel, Rhia, Sparrow, Timayame, Nic, Arik, Schwan, Lunch and everybody I used to talk to in the old TS server - It’s been quite some time since I’ve really spoken to any of you but I have to say, some of my fondest memories on LotC came from you all. Hopefully I can drop by and talk to some of you again when I get the chance. Good luck to you, whatever you’re all up to these days.

Staff - This really goes for the entire staff team, though is mostly aimed at the GM/Administration teams. As an EXGMATUTOEXGMOLOTC myself, I obviously know what it’s like to go through that stress sometimes. Nonetheless, you hold the power to take the server in whatever direction you see fit. I continue to hold the belief that if the server is to truly progress, we need some more in game admins who can actually relate to the playerbase. I remember that when I was a GM, it was often very difficult to get your opinion across sometimes. Work together and create a more collaborative atmosphere amongst GMs and Admins and I’m sure things will eventually begin to improve. However, I think in recent months, you’ve begun taking the server in a far better direction. Good luck to you all and I hope you continue along that route.

The community at large - I think it’s important sometimes to just remember that LotC is a game and in any kind of faction related server, you’re always going to win or lose at different times. I encourage everyone just to end the OOC bitterness and treat each other as you would any of your friends. We’re all here for our own enjoyment after all.

To anyone else, I’m sorry if I’ve ever done anything to make LotC any less entertaining for you than it should have been. If you have any last questions you’d like to ask me, feel free. If I’m not on the forums, I’ll probably be on skype fairly regularly. With that all said and done, I guess I’m out so peace LotC.

I remember the first day I saw you in Solace, albeit you scared me a bit because I always got raided and you came stomping in with diamond armor and my first thought was '**** Ima die.'  Yet you grew to be one of the most respected people in the community from my eyes.  I don't usually make long good bye posts to leaving friends yet someone of your calibre deserves it.

You always hold your cool and I've literally never seen you get very upset.  (Except when Agnub is bugging you on skype ;) )  I am glad I got to meet you and enjoy all the RP you bring.  You really helped make my LoTC days a great experience and my only regret is not rping with you more.  It's still a vivid memory of mine the first dwarven vs human war when me you and agnub plotted lettign the dwarves right through Salvus for a direct assault on the capital, amazing times.

The community is truly losing a great human being with your departure, not many people respected you or what you brought to the table.  I will dearly miss our Mogrim and Lancel plots and schemes to aid one another.  I wish you the best of luck in where ever life takes you and hope you have an amazing post LoTC.
