A Slimy Situation[!]

A calm aura hovered over the Dwarven basin, the fires of war simmering down from a long day of warfare, and an innocent peace in their hearts. On the walls above, Alrasians slept quietly in their tents, and druids rested next to their tree, all was at peace. One pillar of smoke slowly rose into the night sky as the stars twinkled past, and the fires of a smithy blazed hot in the darkness. Dared Starbreaker stood in his forge, carefully beating at the molten iron rod, forming it into different shapes. As he experimented and toyed with the rod, the pipes pumped sludge and useless scraps into the lake, emitting a putrid smell. Little by little the sludge inched it’s way to the center of the lake, where the slime cave used to be.

The night went on however, and Dared still worked at his forge, sweat trickling down from his brows. Soon, he put his tools down and walked out of the forge to sit on the grass, and simply stare. What he saw however, was not a blissful, sparkling lake. A wispy green smoke had begun to rise from the center of the lake, and sludge was pouring out of the opening in the middle of the lake. Alarmed, Dared strode around the lake to the Grand King’s chambers. As he entered them, Wulfgar looked up from his notes, and motioned Dared over, “wut beh dqa issu lad, dis beh ah vereh layte noite weh ‘ave heer.” Responding in a hurried manner, Dared told of what was happening, “Meh keng, dere beh green smuke roisin’ frum da centeh ov da layke an sludge comin frum sum ‘ole en da buttom ov et. Ah feer fer da wurst meh keng.” Frowning, Wulfgar put down his quill and began to put on a second layer of robes, ready to head outside. The both of them soon found themselves staring at a large plume of green smoke emerging from the center of the lake.

As the hours grew on, a crowd of Dwarves and Alrasians began to grow at the edges of the lakes, all wondering what the plume of smoke could be. Then, a rumble was heard beneath the earth, accompanied by a great screeching. Covering their ears, the onlookers all looked away from the plume for a few seconds. In those seconds, the basin shook, and then exploded. A green wave of sludge and goo shot out of the pit, splattering all over the walls of the basin. Many of the onlookers found themselves covered in the strange goo, no side effects or burning sensations coming from it. Thoroughly confused, the onlookers cleaned themselves off and began to gather a party of explorers, as well as a small group of paddle boats. On the orders of the leaders of both Alras and Urguan, the explorers set out towards the center of the lake, their families praying for safety. Once the explorers reached the center of the lake, a great whirling was heard, and the explorer’s boats began to get sucked into the water. In a panic, many tried to jump overboard and swim back to shore. However, like the boats, these men and women were sucked down into the pit as well, their screams muffled by the rising sludge.

Standing in horror, Grand King Wulfgar took a step back from the lake, and then simply stared ahead, his mouth agape and his eyes wide. It was several minutes before anyone moved, onlookers gazed on as the lake bubbled and spat, sludge beginning to cover the lake’s surface. As the sludge spread, it began to condense, forming a solid surface atop the polluted water beneath. Then, the smell hit the onlookers. Many staggered back, yelling in disgust as the horrendous stench hit their noses. As the sun began to rise, the stench became worse and worse as the sludge warmed. Thoroughly disgusted, the nobles of both Urguan and Alras took their talks inside, and the populace of both nations dispersed back to their homes.

Balek Irongut stands on the edge of the lake, covered in slimy goo. He whistles innocently as the eyes of nearby, slime-soaked residents glare at him inquisitively. Balek abruptly stops whistling as he takes notice of this, wrinkling his brows before he utters:

"Wot? WOT? Dun' look at meh!"

Sylen was browsing the shops in the city, when he noticed everyone gathering around the water, and so he decided to take a look. He watched the paddle boats go out, and the fate that befell them was not entirely unexpected.

He murmurs to himself, "The slime problem just keeps getting worse here, especially with all the pollution they are putting into the lake..."

He makes way towards the city gate, and getting on his horse, gallops off to tell the rest of the Snelves about this.
