Finding Shades

I’ve recently been confronted a few times In-character regarding Shades, and people pointing fingers, spouting how “You must be a Shade!”. I’ve decided to write this post in regards to that, and try to cease some of the misguided accusations. I am one of the few Shades who hide that fact, and would like to keep doing so.

So, what is a Shade? Imagine your characters personality, then suddenly having a new personality who is naturally chaotic shoved into you. It’s virtually invisible to everyone aside from yourself, and your Shade Father/Mother (the person who made you one!). Even your Shade Brothers/Sisters don’t know you’re a Shade! The only time this Shade is notable in a characters features is when you use Shade magic (Your eyes become blackened).

Now you may be thinking: “What about that black yucky aura!?” Well a dark aura isn’t a dead giveaway for a Shade. You see, everyone actually has an aura. Depending on your personality and morality it’s a different color. The lighter of a color your aura is, the more morally positive you are. While a darker aura is someone who is naturally malicious and possibly evil! Shades don’t always have a black aura, that is only when we taint our own aura to use Shade magic.

So going off a person's aura isn’t a sound form of finding a Shade. A Shaded character doesn’t act any specific way either. Each Shade is different depending on who has it, and who you got it from, so there isn’t any real pattern. The only single trait which is common amongst Shades is chaotic actions, or seeking chaos.

So TL;DR, Really the only way to know a Shade is a Shade is:

  • Black eyes.

  • Itharel can sense them.

  • A possible dread-like effect.

  • They make it clearly obvious they’re a Shade. Generally via tendrils.

I hope this helps understand Shades a little more!

Don't some shades have pure white hair depending if they were reanimated for possession? And does healing a shade present the same effects as healing an undead/corrupt being? (Wounds don't close or respond to the magic.)

We respond the magic, it heals us however it causes great pain. Shades don't have white hair, its just that so many shades have white hair. My own Shade, Malineer is blonde.

And when they walk about in dark robes with scary masks and hisses all the time.

I think you're confusing us with the Necromancers :troll:

But in seriousness, there is a difference between

Kalameet clenches his teeth, hissing.

and

"How dare you speak to me in such a way!" Kalameet hisses in a harsh tone.

We don't reanimate, or posses. It just so happens a lot of us are High elves. It's a running joke we call "The Order of the Whitehairs". As for holy magic, it heals us, but it hurts like mad. So it kinda defeats the purpous.

I know a good way.

Aerial's Holy fire cannot harm the mortal races, but will harm anything evil. Its basically a lie detector test.

Similar to the Pyro in TF2?!?!

Hehe.

What about blasting them with a holy spell...that's basically a shade-checker. Though suspect shades won't take too kindly to clerics pouring flames of reckoning over them and then announcing: "It didn't kill you, you're fine. Have a nice day."

Shades aren't inherently evil. They are driven towards creating chaos, not destroying all that is good. So finding one will always be a bit of a mission if they aren't using their magic. Though being a shade creates this other super ego that always wants to show its amazing pew pews, so it actually isn't all that hard to get a shade to use their magic.

But just to round up some things. Yes, Priest Healing is a good method of finding if someone is a shade (or if not that their life-force is severely skewed towards darkness in some OTHER way) because they're the ones who will scream out in pain when you use your holy healing beeeaaaam.

I'll be quite honest, acting like that is very lawful neutral, not lawful good. While there are those who go into knighthood or even healing for the duty, but I would think most of the clerics aren't out to sadistically hunt down dark beings.

I believe Kalen is one of more lawful neutrality rather than goodness, as is presented in his duty stance to the world. Hosper would be presented as more neutral good, having codes he can go by, but will take things into heavy thought.

Or you can personally know almost every shade and wraith in rp.

To clarify a person's natural aura darkens when they become a shade. They move towards the dark end of the color spectrum which is why they appear more blackened. However this does not mean that non-shades can't have naturally darker auras. If a person with has a natural black aura it does not necessarily mean they are evil.

The tricky part is when a shade has arcane evo on top of shade magic. Correct me if I am wrong but a shade can hide their aura if they are casting something like fire evo if it is just fire evo. If an already corrupted shade attempts to cast arcane evocation their corrupted aura color is what is used.

So if my arcane evo was light purple before shade corruption it no longer matters. Once corrupted my evo will never again be that light purple but instead a dark purple or blackened purple.

Our aura is an obvious Shade aura when we use Shade in conjunction with our magic. Shade is a spice ontop of our magic, along with a side of tendrils and a little bit of chaos sauce.

Kalameets was naturally an evil, mean character. So his aura has always been on the darker side. A dark aura doesn't instantly mean Shade is indeed true, as mentioned beforhand.
