Had a conversation the other day with my bud ptahwithin about the low orcish player base. One thing that came up was the idea that it is hard to understand and learn the orcish blah. After asking some of the 'veteran' orcs none of them agreed but I don't really agree. After getting back on my old orc I found it quite hard to get back into speaking some good blah. I also got some friends to make orcs and they seemed to have no idea what was going on in rp due to the blah.

So my question is what do you think about Orcish Blah? Want to voice your opinion or got a different answer then make a comment. This is for anyone who has rped with orcs, seen orcish rp, has rped one, or is currently rping one.

Just wanted to throw in an example of how blah can be complex for some players. Orcish blah is not 100% set language one example we came up with was Castle. Orcs can say all kind of things like Kastul, Castul, Castuul, ect ect. I'm obviously not hoping to throw out blah all together I just feel like if a lot of people agree with me maybe to lessen the blah would be a good way of making the orcs more appealing for those applying and the current playerbase.

Example of what I'm talking about.

Usual orcish along the lines of: "Ug mi am da high zhaman rusk ob klan dom und mi wull une duy tyke da zity ob Vekaro!"

Changed version: "Ug mi am da High Zhaman ov Clan Dom and mi will ash day take da zity ov Vekaro!"

Quick example to show what I was thinking in 'simplifying' blah. :)

I can't understand Orcs these days, and I've killed plenty of them! Therefore, it is a problem when you can't RPly convey that you want to kill an Orc and that Orc says, 'no we're part of the Bloc' or something of that sort. I've had to get a translator (Barnabus) to tell me what they are saying!

You didn't even say a lot of those words as they're supposed to be said.

Ug mi am da high zhaman rusk ob klan dom und mi wull une duy tyke da zity ob Vekaro!"

Should be

Ug. Mi am da high zhaman rusk ob klan Dom agh (agh is and) mi wull ash dey tayke da goi ob Vekaro!

I can never understand orcs lol. I normally just PM them and ask them to translate what they are saying for me, or have someone else do it.

I play an Orc now and I don't seem to have a problem with it, and nobody I've RP'd with have complained. Before I became one, though, I thought a lot of the fun came from not knowing what the heck was going on with them. Makes for some sketchy situations! My vote is to keep the blah the way it is.

Remove all the orcish dialect (stuff like agh) and keep basic stuff (flatz = kill). Still demonize the English language, so it is fun learning the language and it takes a second for non-commoners to translate your gibberish.

How about the LT collab with our shamans, makeup some bullshit lore to allow us to speak like people without the entire tusk issue and just leave the blah as the native language which would normally be used between Orcs only, meetings and such. The language barrier is one of the reasons nobody plays an Orc outside of pvp.

It perfect. It is easy to learn, and not hard to understand even if you don't know all of it.

Think it depends. I can understand Orcs from time to time, but some players produce straight up gibberish. I at one point spoke Blah and learned Blah too for my goblin, so I'm aware of quite a few terms. Recently, a lot of Orcs have been speaking at such a garbled level that it's beyond my comprehension.

When I was originally applying to the server, I actually picked up the Blah pretty easily and had a firm grasp of it.

The problem with that is that it wouldn't make any sense in rp. It's been long-established as a fact in the lore that orcish jaw structure and tusks make it difficult or even impossible for orcs to speak common. What kind of lore could reasonably explain why having big tusks sticking out of your mouth and a massive under-bite suddenly doesn't impair speech anymore?

perhaps the tusks actually pierce through the flesh on the bottom jaw, so that way they can still speak with their lips.

Hello, yes.

Me, Gragarn, and Blawharag brought the Blah to the server.

Yes, it was us.

Before the Blah, all orcs talked in regular English. It just didn't sound right at all. Trust me, you don't want to go back to that.

Well if you really want to BS it, you just call BS on the fact the tusks effect it anyway. We made up the tusk thing in Aegis to force people to speak the blah, you could just call BS on that and save a lot of time by writing up lore.

Personally though I like the blah as is.

Do you mean you made up tusks affecting speech, or made up tusks period?
