On a bright day, as the sun smiled the suns smile, the simple folk of Karovia went about their business. Peddling their wares, tilling their crops, buying and selling to one another, many failed to notice a single figure emerge from the main keep. Their King, Andrik Vydra. As he came to the notice of more and more of the citizens, a general hush overcame the crowd. Waiting for his people to settle, he finally spoke.

"Citizens of Akovia, my fellow Karovians, my loyal subjects. Today is a sad day indeed."

The King walked down into the main marketplace, passing the Crows Inn, the local smithy, as all looked on.

"As you all know, when I succeeded our once beloved King Varon, I instituted a series of reforms that effectively left our nation defenseless. We have no standing military, my own noble house has no levies to call upon, in fact - we don't even have a Lord MarshalI trusted that the enemies which our past King made for us would accept that a new man now ruled Karovia, one with a new vision - one of peace. I trusted that in times of need, our citizen soldiers, you brave people who stand before me would be enough to protect our nation and our faith.

Andrik stopped before some of the new arrivals, good folk who wanted to simply lead a new life, away from strife and conflict.

"I was wrong.

The time for complacency has come at an end."

Andrik continued, raising his fist and clenching it angrily.

"Our dusty forges will be worked again, our stores will be replenished."

"No longer will we be trampled upon, accused and accursed, made seem less human because of our origins and beliefs."

Again coming to a full halt, the King turned, now facing the great majority of his people, who looked on with curiosity.

"From this day hence, Akovia is in a state of emergency. A people in a situation so desperate that every able man and woman must work to the greater good. We will establish a fighting force, and provide them the supplies necessary for war. We will shore up our defences, gather our allies, and let the world know that we are no longer prey. "

"Prepare yourselves good citizens. For I fear the worst is yet to come."

Not waiting to see or hear their reaction, the King returned to his keep, the gates shutting closed.
