Evening mates,

Good fight, grr oren gms grr, etc etc, hope you're all having a good night.

Now, tonight I've decided to try and start tackling a rather apparent issue that many people brought up on my suggestion thread - yes, you guessed it, player retention. One of the main problems I see is that new people log in and don't know what to do. They have literally 0 clue unless they PM people - and even then, they don't know who to PM, what road to walk down or whatever. This should hopefully help out a bit, as well as give players a chance to promote their settlements and attract more players.

It's basically just creating an info bank of whatever a new player might need to know, and where they can find their kind of RP.

If you're a settlement/city leader, please contact me with this filled out if you're interested in having your place put out there for newbies to look at.

Name of place: Self explanatory, name.

Brief description of place: Talk about where it is, what the area is like and the kind of people/RP that it normally supports and offers (EG: Orenian towns normally have a lot of military RP).

List of players who can help newbies: A few players who would happily help out new players, a brief description of their character and what they are able to offer for new guys (homes, group recruitment, jobs etc).

RP friendly directions to the place: Either a picture of a map to follow, some detailed instructions and screenshots of the way there or whether they should meet someone elsewhere to guide them.

Example:

Spoiler

Example settlement:

Holy Farmswood

Holy Farmswood is an Orenian settlement, mainly inhabited by friendly and peaceful farm folk! Our lands are mainly consisting of huge, sprawling fields as far as the eye can see, and we offer plenty of jobs for people wishing to take up a tool in the field and help out. Over here in the Savannah, it gets pretty hot however, so if you’re not prepared to sweat through a hot day of working, you may wish to settle elsewhere.

People to look out for

HBrules - John Johnson: John is the leader of the outback farming town. He’s a big, rounded lad with a jolly looking beard. He can help you out with finding a home, getting a job and getting some equipment to start you off.

Finalhazard - Smelly Bill: Bill is a grumpy old sod, who smells terrible - you really can’t miss him. He normally tugs a cart up and down the roads from the farms to the capital, so if you need directions try looking around for him.

Directions

Follow the road out the back of Johannesburg, ignoring the detour to the Savoyard Marshes until you reach a rickety old bridge over a river. Cross it and keep going straight down the path - you should be able to see us by then!

Once more, if you'd like to take part or ask more into this, please PM me about it.

-Harrison

All this fancy stuff just to see them running up and down on their respective settlements. I see this as a good thing, but said players need to give off a good impression to new players and not just be a reference.

A little bit of meta for noobs. But honestly, it can really help and I hope so see this prosper.

I got the impression/idea there might be some kind of bulletin board type thing placed around, maybe at spawn? It'd be best anyway, since noobs are far less likely to browse the forums to solve their problems. I certainly didn't, and relied on what I had in-game unless I just wanted to read lore.

Yea, I mean as soon as I joined I was bombarded with helpful messages from dwarves to guide me to the city. But no info from the server.

The spawn island has to be made more compact and centralized like in last map. Right now you have to walk these weirdly long beaten paths under the shadow of the giant trees. It should feel more like a lobby.

That actually is being worked on and planned right now! This is just the first step in fixing our map up.

Yeah, I guess so, but it's why I'm trying to make it like an RP sort of bulletin board, like Starry said - hence why the example was written in an RP sense.

This seems like a great idea. Even as an older player who has left and returned to LotC a few times, knowing who to PM to find settlements,  I would have loved to have a resource like this in the past.

This looks like a really good idea, HB. Props to you for starting this.

Spoiler

Can I just do this anyways, without having to get listed by a leader?

What if instead of a Monk spawning area full of degeneracy, races started in small introductory camps for each of their main settlements?

Monks are utterly useless.

Ommm 'Newbie' is so derogatory...in all seriousness though it's a start.

I think this could really help, although you need to make sure that the new players can easily find this information.

Weeeeell I'd prefer if it were leaders doing it, so they can officially edit and manage it, but if a leader gives you permission to do it I don't see why not.

I plan to make some very hard to miss boards with lots of forum links around, as well as get some AT help too.
