Answer to the first question is I didn't know we did but 1.8 is more fast paced which is more fun, and to the second question, simply yes.

You can say your armor is whatever you want, but black ferrum is supposed to be like, weapon steel I think? Like it holds an edge really well but its not best suited for armor. Tbh the devs just did it for PvP stuff, black ferrum wasn't a thing before nexus.

If I had to take a guess, I'd say it's both, leaning towards metal. Metals actually do have a crystal lattice, but they aren't "crystals". In other words its some weird special LotC mineral because diamond armor doesn't make any sense.

Well, on the lore side, the last things properly written about it were in Anthos, saying it's quite ******* hard to break, that it easily makes alloys with ferrum with a few issues when using such weapons, and that when struck, creates a higher pitch than we can hear, but for some reason compares it to obsidian and glass...

 

Honestly, I'd take it's a metal with a few quirks
