Prose, 1879 - Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema

[Prose by Sir Lawrance Alma-Tadema, 1879]

Scholars of The Library of Dragur are beginning to commonly be found roaming the roads all throughout Axios, giving all passersby tomes labeled, "The Obelisks"

The first page begins with, "Greetings, citizen of Axios.  It has come to my attention that the time for us to protect the obelisks scattered about these lands has arrived.  When we first arrived to these mysterious isles, I had discovered two and found them to be quite interesting.  I knew they had some sort of meaning and decided to write information of their locations into a dusty blank book I had picked up on the Island of Malin.  In the middle of my searches to find more of these monoliths, I heard word of an ancient kharajyr priest saying that they received a message from their diety that the obelisks were meant to be protected from a horrid Evil.  They obelisks are used as a key of sorts, holding back some sort of terrible and immense power.  The kharajyr solemnly said that their goddess was struggling to deliver the message, for they were in some great fight.  She managed to say one last thing before breaking Her connection with Her follower; there were ten obelisks to be found.

"I had found this news to be quite disturbing and new I mustn't give up on my search for the obelisks.  Months passed and I finally succeeded in my little quest, though years began to go by and nothing else could have been learned from these pillars besides appearance and location.  I felt as if I had nothing else to do but to wait until something were to happen with them, which something has.  Some form of great power is draining the power out from the obelisks seemingly one-by-one.  I believe that if we are to lose all of the obelisks, Axios will be lost, and we'll be forced to leave our homes yet again.  So here are my notes of them all.  A few bits may be outdated.

Sincerely,

Nemir Valnelis Ward, of The Library of Dragur"

Sarrion would toss the book to the side after the rather long read. "I mean, it's inevitable by now, isn't it? At least the elves should know this." Muttered the unaging elf himself.

"To whom it may concern,

I too have seen the obelisks spread through the lands, and it's sparked my own curiosity. Perhaps, though unlikely, the Kha are correct, and they are some old chains for an evil held beneath the lands, but I have my doubts. Axios had been occupied long before we modern-folk landed here, and all the races and people from eons ago have since left, or died. Obelisks like this may be vestigial parts of old religions, or kingdoms - built in the days when their use was apparent, but have since just wasted away in time. Any host of answers could be brought up to their purpose, but what is currently apparent is that they've done nothing since we've found them to warrant any real answer. We have no reason to fear them, or create conspiracies about what they do, when we have no evidence of such. No offense to the Kha-folk, but one testimony from a priestess isn't going to convince me that the world is ending, and that we should clutch our loved ones in fear of the obelisks and whatever they hold/do.

Hektor Blargskogr peers at the book, shaking his head in dread "You lot say these things are going to be the cause of our destruction, so you decide to share their exact locations with the entire world? You lot aren't as smart as I've been told."

Dunstan, whose name roughly means dark stone, gets violently triggered. He starts screaming about volcanoes, volcanic ash, pyroclastic flows, and other volcano related knowledge. It seems someone had appropriated his rocks.

Enedor's face lights up in interest as he reads through one of the tomes. Giving a short nod of approval, he'd set out to visit one of the obelisks. " And I was beginning to think they truely were nothing!"  He pronounces.
