Airebys’ Blah Dictionary for Snow Elves

Preface:
Ignorance breeds ignorance, and so to respect another race or culture, one must understand its language. Blah is an ancient and sacred language, one revered by its people: the Orcs. Snow Elves would be ill-advised to try and speak it to an Orc, as their lack of tusks would make it sound like ‘a horse pissing into a tin bucket’; which is quite disrespectful. It would not be surprising for one who goes against this advice to be clobbered by an Orc. Even so, readers are not discouraged from mouthing and sounding out certain words in private to practice their understanding of the language.

An important nuance to note is the grammatical differences in written and spoken speech between Common and Blah. For instance,
the “S” pronunciation is replaced by a “Z” pronunciation, exaggerated by their guttural and tusk-hindered speech. In addition,

  • “f” or “v” sounds may be replaced with “v” or “b”, as in 'give = gib', 'believe = buhleeb', etc
  • 'ee' or ‘ea’ sounds are usually written as 'ee' or 'ii'
  • 'can' would most likely become 'kan', 'kin', etc
  • 'staring' would become 'ztehrin', 'ztarin', 'ztayrin', etc. All personal flavour, “y” and “h” are popular to make 'eh' or 'ah' sounds

Blah is arguably the most important language a traveler can have in their repertoire. In the event of an orc raid, understanding the bandits orders and demands can save your life. If you are in the presence of a shaman, or any other prominent member of orc society, comprehension of what is being said is crucial if one is to engage in dialogue and properly convey respect.

The current Blah (distinguishing it from Old Blah, wherein some of its roots lie) is a modified form of Common, where grammar is essentially identical, with some words replacing the need for multiple words, with the most basic nouns being replaced entirely. The reason for these modifications is quite simple: the presence of tusks in orc mouths, which hinders the lip movement necessary to properly pronounce Common words. Although the speech may sound guttural and primitive, it is a poor indication of orc culture and wisdom, both of which are rich, admirable, and built on honor. Those who meet and speak with orcs would do well to remember that. Without further ado, a compilation of common phrases in the Blah, chosen to ensure the life and intactness of the limbs of the reader when in Orcish company.

NUMERICAL SYSTEM
The majority of the races use a decimal system for counting (that is, counting with a base of ten). However, orcs use a quinary system (base five). The first five numbers have unique identifiers, and the numbers six through nine possessing the prefix “H’-”. Numbers greater than nine possess the suffix “-ty”.

Ash - One
Dub - Two
Gakh - Three
Futh - Four
H’ - Five
H’ash - Six
H’dub - Seven
H’gakh - Eight
H’futh - Nine
Ashty - Ten
Dubty - Twenty

Very nice that this was ripped right from old orc guides with minimal flair on its presentation. Very spicy.

Burning all the books of this elf f*ck wouldn’t be entirely possible, nor wise. Many an uruk and even gobo do not like when us elves are unable to understand them, and some have even assisted in completing this dictionary. Keep your torches and don’t waste your time.

This dictionary is not intended for any elves to speak Blah, but for them to translate what Orcs are saying; as indicated in the Preface.

It is not meant to have ‘flair’ or be ‘spicy’, it’s meant to be functional. Would you care to teach other races how to understand Blah? Because I’ve spoken with some Orcs and even the ones who helped expand this dictionary weren’t keen on doing so; but were fine with snow elves learning to understand Blah. Understanding and speaking are two different things, so leave off with the sarcasm. Besides, it was indicated that this was a work from books in the Grand Library, so its not as if I’m discrediting the authors who wrote the original works and coining this as my own--I’m simply transcribing. If it makes any difference, I could drop the names in the post of the book authors I transcribed from.

Vexalia bursted out into a fit of uncontrollable laughter when the news reached her, whilst she wasn’t in the company of her beloved husband. “Mayilu, the false and unworthy elves of Fenn have planned on using the language of another more favoured race than them, they’ve also stolen the works made them the Draugr library. I pity the fools in Fenn who condone plagiarism, and even more so their land because of their blatant stupidity that lead to them stealing others’ works because none are intelligent enough to write their own.” She snorted, kissing the heads of her twins before going back to reading  copy of the book. “I’m going to have to tell Fennic citizens to skah off now..”
