THE FRUSTRATION OF DEFEAT, 1742

A Response to the Duke of Eastmark @Kursion

Issued and confirmed by His Grace, the Duke of Westmark, 12th of Tobias’ Bounty, 1742

Dear nephew,

I understand the frustration that you feel in this moment. Losing a war is never easy. Especially when the mighty legions of the Alliance of Independent States are coming towards your gates.

However, I don’t think that justifies your pathetic attempts to slander, insult or disown me from our family. Therefore, I challenge you to a duel to the death. You can even choose your own champion, but in that case I will also choose mine, and I don’t think none of yours could defeat the might of Prince Antonius Martius of the House of Vilac.

You claim to be the most loyal noble of Arcas, but at the same time you forget the history of our family, as the House of Merentel was indeed born of rebellion after the collapse of the Fifth Empire when Ser Alexander I Merentel, a descendent from the first Duke of Eastmark, that was actually a Staunton, swore fealty to the King Tobias I of Courland.

I remember the day you were born in Helena. At that time the capital of the Imperium Renatum. Back then, your father Sergius allowed me to took you in my arms. I hope he doesn’t mind now when I take your head away from your body.

As the King of Helena said to the good Duke of Morsgrad: I know you are afraid; follow your instincts.

Regards,

Your uncle

 Signed,

HIS GRACE, Alexander III of the House of Merentel, Duke of Westmark, Count of Alannor and Baron of Hallowfell

“Challenging a man to a duel, and then hiding behind a champion? Last I knew, only cripples and women could call upon champions. Judging by the way you’ve slandered the name of Courland, I judge you to be both. You take her titles for yourself, you do disservice to her name, you know nothing of the ‘Real Stauntons’ of which you speak,” an old Curthose would pen, before sharpening his blade, as he would not cower behind another man, afraid to answer for his own actions.

Nelson Watts: *charges up cathode and anode plates with potential energy while it synchronously sparks with a bright flash of light to a rod* I see there is an internal conflict between the House of Merentel. I wonder who would come out ontop, would it be alexander or would it be Tobias.

Axor Capilari: I remember picking up Tobias as a little child and watched him grow throughout the years. Me and Sergius was close and always expressed that Tobias would be his pride and joy and success the righteous ruler of the House of Merentel. I should contact my friend Watts to borrow some lightning rods

“Your nephew doesn’t have to claim to be the most loyal noble as he shows it by action. Though you, on the other hand, break your word.. your oath like a village idiot. It seems to me that your nephew wishes to prove that your family can be trusted instead of having a knife at its back incase it breaks from its promises. It also appears to me that you wish to continue on the list of betrayal like your ancestors before you had instead of living in the present and it seems you also wish for division in the lands of Arcas than races and nations being united to live in peace. Alexander Merentel, you are nothing but an oathbreaker, a fool, and a weak man who calls himself Duke cause he loves to live in a fantasy than a reality.”

“If you wish to execute someone for treason that’d be your own father, Alexander. He has broken his oath and is nothing but a weak and a pathetic man... or is he a man? I can’t tell since he asks for a duel yet hides behind a man like the scared man he is.”
