The Lieutenant's Flight

There is a Stafyr tradition, where one must leave their home for a year, without return.

The tradition hung heavily in Konrad's mind as he sat on the steps outside the clinic, staring at the entrance to the barracks. It was late, and no one was on the street. It felt oddly freeing. On this evening, Konrad wasn't bearing the weight of a patrol in the morning, or a training. He exhaled, remembering the fatigue-inducing days of the war or the aching cold of a harsh blizzard.

The former-Lieutenant had spoken to the Lord Marshal, requestion a dismissal of the oath that had bound him to what used to be his home. A request that he had brewed and considered in his mind for a long while. The words he spoke to the Lord Marshal meant something, but the weight of them hadn't set in until night fell.

The night he had planned to leave for awhile. He had an aching suspicion for a long while that his efforts were to be in vain within Haense. A nagging idea that kept tearing his motivation apart until he had heard it nearly confirmed. He gazed upon the streets of Haense, hoping to reminisce upon the memories he made.

Though the memories were few and far between, he still held a slightly warm feeling in his stomach as he stood. Taking a deep breathe, Konrad turned his gaze to the bridge. The ever-growing knot in his stomach at the peak; though, he knew this was right.

His own words reminisced in his head as he walked through the gate, and across the bridge. With only his pack on his back, and his horse next to him, his gaze fell across the bridge to look at Haense once more. 'There was no significance lost in his departure, and he did not need a ceremony,' he had said. Though, the Lord Marshal had reiterated otherwise to him. He took a deep, rather stuttering breathe before he finally departed, leaving Haense behind.

The flight still on his mind, he considered taking it at this moment.

Though, he needed a home to return to: something he will need to find again.

And silently slipping out, he set off to find one.
