A Radical End To Ooc Conflict

Today, we (the Staff) have decided that enough is enough. I must say that I personally have recently been BEYOND disappointed with the actions of the player base as of late, and I know the majority of the Staff and players alike can agree. For those of you who have been unaware of what has been going down, essentially players no longer find it necessary to solve RP issues and conflicts in RP, but rather their first action is to take the conflict and turn it into an OOC explosion. This is rather baffling for the community of a ROLEPLAYING server, where RP should be used to deal with RP.

 

 

 

What Happened / What is Happening?

 

First, there was the issue with the White Roses wall that was built to surround a part of the main road which served as the main passage to the elves and the humans. I can admit, this is something that we, the Staff, did not want to occur as the main road was supposed to be a neutral area without anyone having control of it. However, we did not do anything about it because it is an RP issue, and we realized immediately that this could lead to good RP and there was no need to create an OOC issue out of something that occurred IC. Sadly, a large part of the players did not come to such a conclusion. Before the wall was even near completion, before it even began to "hinder RP" (as some people say), OOC threads began popping up on the forums asking for it to be removed. As shocking as this is, the worst part was that, when told to solve the issue in RP, many people responded with "it can't be solved in RP", which is quite frankly incredibly far from the truth and more a sign of laziness or unwillingness than anything else.

 

Next, there was the conflict between the Orcs and the Dwarves. Sadly, as was to only be expected, IC issues began turning into OOC issues. We understand that this is not a perfect world and that, no matter what, OOC conflict will always occur in one way or the other from a war or major IC crisis. However, what occurred between the Orcs and Dwarves was more than this, it was just a festival of outrageous and immature actions and attitudes. When one side decided it was necessary to take action in RP and the RP was voided by the GMs, the same side took it upon themselves to take out their annoyance on the other race and blame them for this occurance. It got to a point where IC interaction was no longer possible and players on one side of the conflict were told not to RP with players on the other.

 

I prepared another point and details to add to this, but frankly I don't think that three points do any justice to the multitude of examples and situations that have occurred. The examples are numerous, and I'm sure that the majority of you are well aware of them.

 

 

 

So What Will We Do?

 

Sadly, we have played "good cop" for too long in this situation. We've been playing this role since the beginning, and we've never taken any serious action, something that has clearly come back to bite us in the butt. We trusted that the playerbase would get over the unusual amount of OOC conflict arising, but sadly we put too much trust in everyone and the issue grew and grew and became what we see today. Due to this, it is finally time to start playing "bad cop". We have come up with a few points that we WILL go through with if this nonsense continues:

 

• From now on, if you take an RP issue (that can be solved in RP) into OOC when there is no reason to do so, and this action leads to OOC trouble, you will be treated the same as if you intentionally started a flame war, which may lead to a warn or a ban (depending on the situation) as well as the locking of the thread.

 

• If an RP conflict arises that can not be solved in RP, if such a conflict is taken to OOC or the forums because neither side can come to an agreement, the GMs WILL intervene and possibly void the RP, as well as abolish the conflict due both sides being unable to RP without an issue.

 

• Should RP continue to lead to OOC hatred and conflict for unnecessary and immature reasons, the GMs WILL intervene and institute new rules and systems that are guaranteed to be LESS fun for EVERYONE, but will ensure that OOC conflict is minimalized.

Now, I'm sure that nobody wants this, I'm sure that nobody wants GMs stepping into their RP, but luckily for you, you can prevent this from happening. This can be prevented quite easily, actually, all that has to be done is that players need to start solving RP issues in RP (Which should be a "No duh" statement, but sadly it isn't), players need to start asking themselves "Can this be solved in RP? If so, how? If not, what can I do to prevent conflict?", because only then can we all sit back and have fun and be happy and excited when logging into LotC, rather than merely waiting for the next drama fest to come speeding around the corner.

 

We can't do everything around here, we alone can't make this server the ultimate RP experience for you guys if you are unwilling to do the same for yourselves, only YOU can turn this server into what you want it to be. Why create an OOC conflict that will only cause drama and ruin RP when you could figure it out in RP? Now, I'm not saying that figuring it out in RP is always easy or fun, but taking the alternative path is certainly not going to be easy or fun either, not to mention that it'll be worse for everyone further down the road.

Fun is a term that can be defined so variably, thus if Fun is subjected to your personal happiness, then you will not always be happy from this server, if you allow Fun to be defined as the experience of having a cohesive server that changes so much and so fluidly; you might have come to the right server!"

 

NOTE: We can also tell the difference between OOC conflict started by an individual or individuals, rather than a large mass of players, so we have no intention of punishing everyone for the actions of a few, although we have every intention of punishing the individuals should it come down to it.

No but seriously, we have drifted away from flaming the GM/Admin staff to flaming each other. This really needs to stop, we are a community; lets act like one. It seams that if it isn't crappy temp maps, unfair war systems, "corrupt" staff members, then its something else; that something is directing IC disagreements into OOC and vise versa. If you are here for the drama then it seams like that has been taken away because we WILL be taking actions.

Ultimately, I hope this is unnecessary. But great to know staff is beginning to crack down on this finally.
