  1. Brother George Halcourt stepped off his horse as he arrived at his destination. His ambition brought him here, at the top of Mount Tylos, or so he thought. The place was wrong, a mountain top more south of his desired destination, but the intention was right and true: to reflect on the meaning of the word mercy. And so he sat himself down, cross legged, eyes closed. A squire’s thesis: Mercy --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction When I was sent on a pilgrimage to Mount Tylos to reflect on the word Mercy, I embarked on a journey that proved to be both physically and spiritually transformative. The path to the mountaintop was not just a physical ascent but a metaphorical one, leading me to explore the depths of mercy in ways I hadn't anticipated. In the quiet solitude of the mountain, I found myself contemplating this powerful and elusive concept from multiple perspectives. In this exploration, I will first examine how the concept of mercy is commonly used. Next, I will reflect on the ancient Holy scrolls. Finally, I will share my own reflections on mercy—what I have come to believe it truly means, how it challenges us, and how it has the potential to transform not only individual lives but entire societies. Common use In everyday life, the word "mercy" is often invoked to express compassion, forgiveness, or leniency in situations where justice or strict adherence to rules might otherwise prevail. People use mercy to soften the consequences of a mistake, whether in personal relationships, fights, or societal interactions. For instance, a parent may show mercy by forgiving a child's misbehavior instead of enforcing a punishment, while on the battlefield, a Knight might demonstrate mercy by offering a second chance, life, to another soldier who lost the fight.. Additionally, mercy is used in social contexts to call for understanding and tolerance. When someone requests mercy, they are often seeking empathy or a reprieve from harsh judgement. In these daily scenarios, mercy is closely linked to human kindness and the desire to balance fairness with compassion, providing space for growth, learning, and reconciliation. Mercy in the Scrolls In The Scroll of the Virtue, mercy is intricately tied to the practice of various virtues, though not explicitly mentioned. The text emphasizes qualities like charity, patience, and humility, which inherently involve acts of mercy. For instance, in the Canticle of Charity, the Lord commands, "You shall give your fellows the abundance of the spirit, which is My Word," encouraging the faithful to show mercy by sharing spiritual wealth with others. Likewise, the Canticle of Patience calls for enduring hardship without "raising a hand in wrath, nor in envy," suggesting that mercy is not only about forgiveness but also about patience and restraint in the face of suffering. The Canticle of Humility further implies mercy by advising, "You shall not judge your own virtue, be it great or small, for all fall short of Me," underscoring the importance of humility and the recognition that all are in need of divine mercy. My definition In my personal view, mercy can be understood as a complex and paradoxical gift. On one hand, it is an act of grace, a benevolent offering of compassion or forgiveness when it is not deserved. However, this very act implies something deeper: the gift of mercy often comes from a place of having the power to take or condemn. In this way, mercy is not merely an unearned favor but also a relinquishment of something once desired—whether it be punishment, retribution, or even control. The very essence of mercy lies in its ability to transform a decision to harm into one of kindness or leniency. It is, therefore, a gift not only in its bestowal but also in its reversal of intent. When we extend mercy, we are choosing not to take what we once believed was rightfully ours, offering instead something of greater moral value—a reprieve, an opportunity for redemption.
  2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Role of Women in the church Why should women be allowed in priesthood? Introduction The topic of female priesthood is a subject that has been discussed and debated by many generations. Secular Statesmen, Canonist Sovereigns and High-Priests have all had their opinion on the topic. It is with the wisdom of His Holiness Everard VI that a final statement came, and that women were allowed to rise through the ranks as priest, bishop, archbishop, cardinal and even Pontiff. But what led to this decision? Here is the evidence and support. Notable women in the scrolls We read in Gospel 1 and 2 about the first two women ever documented: A nameless woman, mother to the four sons, and Julia, wife to Horen. The nameless woman loved her children more than she loved God, and disobeyed him. When she was called to the Sixth Sky she refused, and thus God showed her the imperfections of her children. She wept and was humbled, as she saw all things are imperfect before God, and ascended to the Sixth Sky. Julia, loyal to her husband, revealed Iblees in Horen’s camp. Yet, she was not careful enough, and thought she had permanently defeated him. When Iblees returned in the form of Saul, she was not there to protect her folk, and thus Iblees was still effective. Drugged into deep sleep, she was later murdered alongside her husband by Krug. Both these women have something in common: they were equal to their husbands, equal to men. She and her husband both received blood and breath and the light of wisdom. They were both virtuous, and both were granted God’s favor. Finally, they both were called by God to ascend to the sixth sky, rendering her equal to men. Julia was granted the same rights as her husband Horen too, as they ruled together, lived together, and died together. We also read in the scroll of Virtue no difference between gender: “And I have also breathed life into your heart, and the hearts of your children. And I have given you life: I am your Father, and the Father of all things.” All things granted to men are also granted to women; all things bid onto men, are also bid onto women; all sin for men, are also sin for women. Men and women are equal for the scrolls, and thus equal for God, meaning they should be equal for the Holy Church too. Female Saints Among the list of saints it’s a matter of moments before one stumbles upon a woman. To sum up some examples: St. Arianne of Ves, St Catherine of Velsen, St. Emma of Woldzmir, St. Judith of Czena, St Julia of Paradisus etc. The list is impressive, just like the male section. Some of these saints even hold a patronage that we’d normally link to men. For example: St Emma of Woldzmir, Patron Saint of Soldiers. Usually we link being a soldier to men, yet through her utmost belief and faith in God St Emma found herself becoming the commander of Canonist forces. Again, no differences were made, no shackles bound to the Saint because of her gender. No, she was equal. Just like God intended men and women. Another great example of a Saint who proves equality is St Catherine of Felsen, Patron Saint of Refugees. She made no difference between men or women, children or elderly: all were welcome under her wing, and all were treated equally. If women can intercede on the behalf of petitioners for God to grant miracles, there is no reason why they should not be a part of every office of the church? Women in the world Currently women are treated equally in this world too. If we look at Hyspia, a respected Canonist state, we see that it is currently reigned by her Sovereign Highness Xiomara I. None would even doubt her legitimacy. Men, women, it does not matter what gender, all Hyspians follow her guidance, and trust her wisdom to lead them to prosperity, safety, and health. Another woman as ruler, Sybille I, should be named too. Despite her bad luck in the beginning of her reign, her people kept their faith and trust in her to rule them. She was responsible for a series of edicts and a peace deal, ensuring new prosperity in the Kingdom of Balian, as new people came to gain honor, and new defensive forts were constructed. Despite their gender, many men respected these women as if equal in nature. Only their status elevated them. If we can follow women in war and peace, and entrust them to reign and bring peace and prosperity to our lands, why would they not be equal for God too? Conclusion So, should women be allowed in priesthood? In these understandings of the scrolls, the saints and other worldly examples, we see that not only are women equal for God, but also for most of us. It is not the gender that defines our faith and trust, it is our actions that matter. Miracles happen to those who pray to men and women, sin happens to men and women and trust is gained by all, men and women.
  3. Acolyte Cecilya Othaman quickly moves to write a letter to the Patriarch!
  4. And so it came that the beacons of the Barony of Artois were lit as Aaun called for it's allies.
  5. THE ROYAL ORDER OF THE BLACK DRAGON Issued by the Grand Knight, on the 10th of Harren’s Folly, 1988 It is the will of the crown of Aaun to re-establish a Knightly Order that will restore a sense of honor and chivalry in their realm. The people of Aaun have always followed these values, yet the Crown finds an absence of a proper order to unite those who seek a forever path in these sacred values. Preceded by the order of the Nauzica and the Knightly circle of Saint Godwin the Apostolic Kingdom of Aaun once more holds a Knightly Order, meant to teach those who find a lack of Chivalry and harbor those who find themselves overflowing with it, turning those into the greatest of the protectors of Aaun. ON RECRUITMENT Many dream of a career as the noblest of soldiers, hoping to get their names permanently written in the history books so that their names and actions may never be forgotten. However, for such an honor and task to be granted upon them, aspiring Knights and Dames will have to succeed through a long and tough course to be able to call themselves a Knight of the Order of the Black Dragon. ON PAGES At the age of nine an aspiring Knight or Dame may find themselves a mentor Knight to learn the basics. They will help their Knight with safe tasks, such as providing for a horse or keeping their armor polished without scratching it. Pages shall not be put in any danger by their mentor Knight, for they would only cause a distraction from the Knight’s original purpose – a page remains a child after all. ON SQUIRES At the age of fifteen a Page, or otherwise worth-proven teen, may request to become a squire. To become a squire, they will have to fulfill the following requirements, to ensure that only the best of the best ascend to the ranks of the Knightly Order: I. They must be enlisted in the Royal Army. II. They must have at least the writ of approval of one seated Knight and their own mentor. The Grand Knight has the final say. III. No Knight may ever take a close family member as their squire. This is to ensure that everyone is indeed worthy and not just a family member. IV. On all rules an exception may be made if deemed necessary by the Grand Knight or the Monarch of Aaun. Once a formal Squire the mentor Knight may now start to properly train the aspirant. They will teach them, among other important lessons, how to wield at least three types of weapons, proper etiquette, and the current relations and status of the Apostolic Kingdom. It’s up to the appointed mentor how these lessons take form, as long as they prepare their squire for their trials. A knight can only take charge of one squire at the time, to ensure their full attention is given. Only if deemed necessary, the Grand Knight may assign a second squire. A Knight will at all times treat their Squire fair and equal to their previous Squires. If a squire thinks they have been treated unfairly, or in any other way feel negative about their experience, they may seek the Grand Knight to discuss a proper solution. THE KNIGHTLY TRIALS A Knight will prepare their squire to face all the designated trials, so that the squire may prove their worth. This training will usually last four to six weeks. Once the Grand Knight, the mentor and the squire agree that the squire is ready they will embark to complete the trials. No Knight may interfere, help, or otherwise influence the trial. I. The Trial of Battle A Knight must first and foremost be skilled in the art of combat. It is thus that in this trial the squire will have to defeat their mentor in a duel best of three. Every duel, they will wield a different weapon, chosen by the Grand Knight, to ensure the squire has been properly trained. If the squire defeats their mentor or it is seen fit that they pass, they will have succeeded in the trial of Battle. II. The Trial of the Holy Spirit A Knight must also uphold all virtues the Holy Father has taught us. In the trial of the Holy Spirit the squire will have to fulfill three tasks for someone active for the church. In order to pass this trial they will have to return with a signed letter of their chosen person stating what they did. III. The Trial of Knowledge A Knight must not always rely on their strength, but also on their knowledge. In this trial a squire is to find themselves a peer of the realm from whom they will learn about their chosen peer’s family. A signed letter suffices as proof of their passing of the trial, completely decided by the peer. IV. The Trial of Survival A Knight is typically skilled in every scenario. In the trial of survival the squire is to go out into the wild with nothing more than a set of clothes and survive three days and nights. During this trial they will have to acquire the head or otherwise proof of the slaying of a predator animal. If they succeed, they pass the trial of Survival. V. The Trial of Honour A Knight is besides a war-experienced soldier also someone who upholds the most holiest of virtues. During the trial of Honor the squire will have to successfully host an event during which they will be assigned a Lord or Lady to entertain through the night. The squire will have to show that they are not also a competent host but also that they’re a competent partner. Her Royal Majesty the Queen or an otherwise assigned courtier will decide if the squire passed this trial. VI. The Final Battle The final battle is the most important trial. Every skill the squire has acquired and used during their previous trial will be tested in this last, final test. The Grand Knight will assign a task that must be completed. If the Grand Knight and His Royal Majesty the King deem this task a success the squire will be knighted at the first held Royal Court. THE KNIGHTLY CODE OF CHIVALRY H O N O U R A Knight has to always act after their honor. Honor is to respect others, and to act after God’s will. C O N S C I E N C E A Knight should never violate rules, nor violate others' limits. M E R C Y A Knight will always show mercy to the people who deserve their mercy. S E L F - S A C R I F I C E A Knight should and will give his life for another at all times, if this meant they saved an innocent soul. F A I T H I N G O D A Knight should always follow God’s will, and should always act after God’s rules. H O N E S T Y A Knight will never keep information from their superiors, nor will they ever lie. KNIGHTLY DUTIES I. To fight in the name of the Royal House of Alstion. II. To protect the Kingdom of Aaun and its citizens with their life. III. To uphold the Chivalric Codex. IV. To defend those who can not defend themselves. THE OATH OF THE KNIGHTS “I swear to be true to the Kingdom of Aaun, and not to maintain silence about any evil that I may know which is being contemplated against it. I swear that I will obey the Grand Knight and aid my fellow brothers and sisters. I swear to cast off any traitor be it friend or foe in honour of our King and the Grand Knight. I swear this before God and men. I bid farewell to my former life and grace my newest with my shield and blade; stalwart and ever vigilant for humanity. This oath I give of my own free and independent will, so help me God.” KNIGHTLY TABLE The Knightly table serves as the directional board of the Knightly order. Once a Knight has served three years they will be granted a seat with the maximum of seven seats, one always held by the Grand Knight. Matters will be discussed here, with all Knights allowed to listen. However, only Knights of the table will have an active say and vote if a matter should come to that. If a Knight proves themselves unworthy of their seat the Grand Knight may at all times strip them from it and reward it to another. It will then be first on the waiting list who shall be awarded the open seat. 9. – THE KNIGHTS OF THE REALMS – Continued and written in name of my father, Sir Philip Laurent Halcourt, When I first showed interest in becoming a squire, my father gifted me a copy of his book and spoke about his travels that came with his search for the Knights of the Realm. She had plans for Haense, for herself, for her future. They would only remain plans, mere ideas, inside the head of that young woman. Without a doubt an ambitious, young woman, murdered by that very own ambition.
