Farming In 4.0

Is something being done in 4.0 to balance farming as a profession so that people can actively pursue it without the fear that anyone can make their own food (like everyone makes their own armor now)?  Or has it been tweaked someone to encourage people to focus on farming?  Has any thought been given to balancing food with seasons etc.?  I guess I am just wondering if farming will be encouraged as its own profession in 4.0.

/r cometheking

plant (lasts a while while it grows/ripens) -> raw ingredient (ex: like flour, lasts a long time) -> finished product (ex: bread - doesn't last that long)

Store food (in flour / raw ingredient form) - most common foods during older ages (stone age, etc.) had some part of the process where the food could be stored/salted to make it last longer.

Would be cool to have sawmills for wood and windmills/water wheels for flour etc. (crushing wheat into flour with a mill)

I do believe that food in 4.0 will only last so long (( a few days or so?)) before it rots and becomes useless making  a need for farmers to be constantly farming  instead of just stock Pilling like what happens now.

I know I heard about professions, but I'm not sure on the details.

Amen to that. When people don't have a need for food and just continually stockpiles it, it bristles my hair as a cook.

I just hope that 4.0 has a way to store resources used to craft/make food so that nations aren't continually starving. i.e Make bread rot in a couple of days, but let wheat and potatoes rot over a week or so. . I think this would ultimately be the best case scenario.

I really don't think your mill idea would work in minecraft. People make mills and water wheels for rp anyway. We cut wood with an axe and make planks on the crafting table. I simply don't think it would

work. And we can't have flour without mods or renaming sugar.

I think flour is already in for 4.0.  I swear I saw it in one of the crafting videos.

We're definitely hoping to move away from the 'community farm' setup where everybody uses the carrot patch of their town when they need to, and towards the 'community farmer'  that is, somebody that will provide some organic yummies for his friends.

What do I know about food spoil times? A lot ;) I know they are implemented so you have to dynamically RP with a Persona, and the local farmer doesn't just stack a chest with food, then forgets about it as long as the granary lasts. Although we do need the guarantee people will step up to the challenge of being a community farmer, or all our lads will starve, lol.

It sounds cool but, as Sporadic stated, it does require a farmer to step up. If he goes offline for a while and no one notices, it could impact the food supplies. There could be a completely new 'food' side to war, taking a bit off the actual fighting.

Having this could really help out with rp. Though some aspects have alreadybeen addded. I feel it would be good to make times for different plants longer, perhaps one day? This would make larger farms a lot more useful. Though at the sametime since we are adding expiration dates we should also make some foods give more hunger than in vanilla minecraft, and make hunger go down slower.

Old Skills plugin meant that you couldn't farm certain products until you worked on your farming skill. This was great for farmers because it meant that their skills were desired upon by the hungry PVPers coming back from a fight. However it was viewed as "not minecraft" because you couldn't just be and do everything at the same time. Now with the changes the server has undergone we will never return to such a place again, which makes me sad, but o well.

The new Professions plugin is all about adding bonuses. So if you are a farmer you will have a way better time harvesting a field of wheat than a normal player will. So while they can still come along and steal all your carrots, when you do it it'll be much more successful, which will mean farms don't need to be so ridiculously large or in so many places, thus making farming a more valued profession. Hopefully. All things are meant to balance out. We'll see how it goes.
