Phrases and Idioms

Phrases and idioms are something that can improve your dialogue, and make your character's way of speaking much more immersive. We may not even notice it when we use them in our speech in the real world, but this is Athera and we barely use any, so instead I got this idea of creating a small thread of phrases, sayings, slang and idioms. This could basically be our 'urban dictionary' to add to the spoken common of our LotC universe.. The purpose is for these phrases to be commonly used, if they aren't already, known by anyone. Added Elven and Adunian phrases too. Shoutout to Sporadic & Chikaea for them

white-rosing is not the same as white-knighting :^)

But either way, that was pre sick. I use most of these already, but I'll attempt to spread 'em.

I would think whiterosing would be pretty much just a human acting superior to others, essentially a violent high elf. But the rest of the thingos work out.

Fixed and added some. I'll just update it whenever this thread has more stuff.

by god's blood

This one doesn't make much sense, since the creator in LoTC does not have a coporial body.

I think it would be interesting in placing why the things are called like that, examples:

What in the Nether

Nether is the "hell" of LOTC, the place where Iblees resides.

For Creator's sake / For Horen's sake

Creator is the great god of LOTC, and Horen is a figure extremelly important to humans, as said to be the first Human.

Can also be said "For Malin's sake", which is about Malin, the first elf.

Eleow, Elrowhead

Elrow comes from Elrow Berries, bright red berries that grow in the cold.

To go full-aheral

Aherals are high elves, which are incredibly narcissistic and arrogant

Touched by Ikuras

Ikuras is the spirit of fear and has come into contact with various mortals making most of them go crazy, or act weirdly.

White-rosing

The White Rose was a very powerful guild in Anthos, which because of it's military power and strength, was able to do most anything they wanted.

Ologing it

Ologs are a subrace of orcs. They are huge, but as well, incredibly stupid.

Also, for Dwarf chat of crazy:

Crazy, insane

In use:
Jess glanced past her shoulder towards a hooded man, her face turning slightly pale as she whispered to her friend;
"That man..  I've seen him before.. I swear he's touched by Ikuras.."

Maybe add stark (i've seen it said at least). Example of use:
"Have you gone mad?" -> "'ave ye gone stark?"

The Adunians had a list of these once... i know at least one of them was using the insult "malaherl" to mean someone who is stuck up. I'll see if I can find the others.

Edit:

Idioms:

Acting the fish: To act like a fool, or make a fool of yourself or others.

A mina to you: Basically good luck

Bear’s a bear: Tell the truth

By the Orc Calendar: When Pig’s fly

To be a horse by the ninth mile: To be Exhausted

Stuffing the Brain: To force an idea into someone, to indoctrinate someone (‘e’s dun a bitta’ stuffin’ th’ brain, ‘adn’t ‘e?)

The gem that overflowed the dwarven vault: Basically the straw that broke the camel’s back

When you speak of the birds…: Basically speak of the devil. The long phrase is, “When ye speak o’ th’ birds, the birds do be a flappin’”.

I’m sure surprised: “I don’t care”. Usually accompanied by the rolling of the eyes.

Easterner

In use:

"The slanties have begun whaling in the Waldenian waters, or so I hear.."

This one sounds dangerously close to real life racism...
