A New Map?

  1. 1. Would you be interested in a new map, to fix our current larger issues?

I say we just do a deus ex, go back to Aegis, and build upon that. Of course, slight touch ups would help too, to make it seem much cooler.

If we have another map built around a nostalgia trip I am quiting lol.

The nostalgia did not make this map good when shiftnative tried to make Aegis again.

Make the map through actual map design and thought and not a nostalgia trip and saying "I like this in Aegis/Asulon/Anthos lets make it again."

We need to stop getting caught up on past maps on focus on the future and a design we think will actually work and has realistic reasons to why its good in a certain pattern.

remake Asulon it was big and awesome. Cloud temple docks. Fast travel and convoys/caravans. cool ideas to throw around for people with a lot more aspiration than I have. Add some depth back to the world, I say.

We don't need a new map. We have to stop getting in the habit of switching maps for the sake of switching it, and fix the main problems Athera is facing.

A bigger map than Athera is just going to lead to the same issues we have now, on Anthos, and Asulon. Towns being everywhere, and roleplay being spread out. The only thing about Athera that didn't work was Nexus regions and how the map itself was delayed for 6 months for no reason.

Remove Nexus Regions and make the map freebuild. A new map isn't going to solve our problems, but just make it worse.

And this is exactly why Anthos, and Athera were both ****. They failed to think back into the past, and incorporate what made the previous maps good, and what didn't work. Instead, both were a result of repeated mistakes.

It's not for the nostalgia factor, but more on how the map was layed out.

Compared to other maps that I have played on, the layout was pretty well made.

The elves were close with their forests to the CT, along with the orc desert. The Dwarves were in their own little section of the map for seclusion purposes, and the humans were so far up north that they were considered the wall of the world to prevent any foreign invasions.

It's just a personal preference, and it would most likely work with said touch ups. We could easily move the orc and elf nations farther away from the CT, lay down some more land, etc.

Need to get off that horse, if I said it was, then I would have said,

"Oh! Let's totally just use Aegis cause it was the best map we ever had and was totes cooler! Lol!!!!!!"

No temp maps... lets just wait until 5.0 is ready.

Rather large map with fast travel to different directions of the map. And seriously make it realistic, with proper nature and height variation, proper mountain ranges and rivers.

How about we expand the map with natural disaster events? Volcanic eruptions and tectonic plate shifting as well as decreasing water levels could make for some interesting rp like avoiding burning death or scavenging from a recently revealed shipwreck that has been hidden under the water...

Put some distance between the nation capitals. Its possibly one of the reasons why so much war has gone on in Athera, we're so close to eachother. Like, even the Fringe and Thales were better distance-wise, and they also had more random taverns.

This is possibly had the whole 'RP stealing' tavern thing come about. That spot with the bridge thats like the linking point of all the nations, thats where everyone has to go to get anywhere. Well, a tavern right there is going to get lots of rp! Longer distances between racial capitals means less likely that a 'RP stealing' tavern'll pop up!

I fear this decision to go to a new map so short notice personally. It's painfully obvious that we need a new map and there is not a single person on this server who doesn't share that view. The only problem is the threat of getting way ahead of ourselves to try and get out of this map and ending up with something even worse than we have now. Athera has its problems, but the map in and of itself right now isn't the worst thing ever. I would like to compare it to Windows 8.

Athera has done a great job at what it set out to do such as make every racial capital a short walk from each other. The map is not complete and utter trash; I would rate it as just okay. The general populace are going to say it is terrible, but they are comparing it to Anthos which indeed was a superior map. If we compare it to Thales, however, then Athera starts to not seem so bad. Like Windows needs a new version though, a new map is needed. The issue therein that as much time as needed should be given for that map, and the player-base should do their best to help and wait patiently with/for it.

I like the sound of what you describe, but it also makes me think of the Fringe. The Fringe was pretty, had a lot of lore, and really wasn't that bad a temp map. The problem was it eventually was exhausted from overuse. Athera, strangely enough, has managed to tough it out pretty well when it comes to overuse for some odd reason. The only problems that have occurred are mainly some pretty significant land scarring in some mainland free-build areas. It should also be noted that right now people have plans in Athera, which I think speaks for itself. People are still enjoying the map enough to continue planning what they are going to do next. It is not like RP is impossible or extremely difficult at this point, and I think that's important to keep in mind.

The end point is that I do not think we should be so quick to scrap Athera. We should look at what it is capable of doing good and possibly moving to further improve that if we cannot fix the problems the map has itself. Additionally, I believe fixing as many of these problems, or trying to and seeing what happens, could be a good use for the remainder of this map. I have enjoyed myself on Athera overall, and it might not be the best map, but at least we know it is okay.

The only reason we have constant war between nation capitals is because we do not have an underlying server threat to focus on, and there's nothing else to do on the server but get involved in constant nation politics. Without a server antagonist, or a server plot, there's going to be constant war, and potentially more OOC drama. It's nothing to do with the map. The real issue is that there's nothing on LOTC to keep anyone busy and a new map is never going to fix that.

The reason why the Taverns, primary Scarlet Lotus Tavern has higher traffic because it's closer to spawn and easier to get to than the other nations, needless to mention the fact that people go there because that's where the roleplay is. Red Rose Tavern is no different from the Salvus from Asulon and Anthos that will suck roleplay like a vacuum because it's easier to get to. Longer distances mean more pain in the ass to travel to places with no guarantee there'd be as much traffic. In fact, that's just going to hurt your cities more because no one wants to walk along the empty road for 20 minutes to get to what might be an empty city. Let's not forget the issue with Anthos where by the time new players have reached the crossroads, they're already starving to death.

Have a contest on map makers of the server to partake in and build the next map.? Not just some mc generated map like Thales. No 4.5. With a new map have an final event leading to it. A portal or boat travel. But please I think a contest of building a big map for the server. Might be fun while we wait?

It depends. Map transitions are always horribly done. Do it right, give the new map time to be made, make it look nice, make it bigger, but add fast travel (do the system right).

[ballsed this up and did it on the wrong account, but you get my point].

History repeats itself. Get ready for the Asulon 2.0. Another few years and we'll have Athera 2.0.
