The Cloud Temple Monks!

Ok, so, in that community meeting transcript there was a bit of talk about the monk situation, and it was mostly 'wait a bit.'

Now, this implementation is 1 of 2 things. Either the staff have no ******* clue how to appropriately gauge the reasons why some people get mad at certain decisions, or some sort of alien has come down from Mars and infested the minds of all people in the 'GM staff chat.'

For the most part, the majority of people who were upset about the monk business weren't upset because some sort of group that helped me players was removed basically. They were upset with the way it was handled, the reasons behind it, etc. So, to like... Say that something will happen, and then basically implement something that is nearly unrelated to any concerns that most people had is... Well, it's pretty silly. Actually, it's incredibly stupid.

The monks as a whole were created as a group to assist and guide new players whilst in the Cloud Temple. The magic given to the monks was given exclusively to heal those whom came to the temple needing healing, and wished to roleplay it out. Yet, in the recent past, the monks have failed to act as consistent guides, consistent healers, or simply consistently at the Cloud Temple helping out. These problems, along with the friendly, intimate, and continual interaction, and even recruitment of unsavory in-character individuals has even further shown that the monks are not serving their purpose.

There is still mediums for which to play peaceful and kind character's in Lord-of-The-Craft, yet the monks for now, and the foreseeable future have been made staff-only, (of whom will not have access to any magic.). This is so that the role of guiding new players, helping them get to where they need to be going and trying to avoid situations in which new players shouldn't be subject to right off the bat. Also these monks can provide up to date information on current history and events going on in a completely unbiased matter, as they are not characters with their own bias but can still offer advise in where best a character should go to roleplay.

About as useful as Guides.

Guides were quite useful. :)

I remember quite well––I got the pleasure and opportunity of being one!

Guides are always helpful.

I don't believe this will work all that greatly. I have a few points why I believe this:

  • New players, are rare. They don't spawn every five minutes, and they certainly won't stay in the temple for long.
  • Monks are NPCs. NPCs are boring to play. The AT or LM or ET will be bored out of his mind after a few days playing a monk. They can't travel, they have to stay at the temple, but they don't have a personality or real even a religion now.
  • They can't just change to a monk whenever, there are limitations such as current rp, disposition of the player, persona limits (number of characters and changing characters), skin change, and many other things.
  • Most talk to new players is done through tells. Besides showing them where to go, new players won't have many more questions. They don't have to learn on their own, but they have to learn that they don't know. If you try and teach them everything about the server from plugins to how to rp in the starting minutes of them logging on, they will not be able to take it all. This means the monk will be in the temple for most likely hours, for a 5-10 min talk with the new player.
  • 75% of players around the temple will help a new player if he needs help. Not many take iniciative, that's true, but that doesn't mean if they feel like the new player needs help, they won't try and help them. If that's happening and then a monk appears to try and take over, it'll just start to make other players not feel like they should help.
  • Since most of their time is going to be spent doing nothing, the monk will most likely be afk a lot, making the probability of a new player joining and they not noticing until it's too late, higher than normal roleplaying.

Even guides did mostly everything through tells while they roleplayed elsewhere. I did.

why not just have a monk application? whether you make a mentor team again for them or whatever, there's plenty of people who could easily take this role on, do well in it yet aren't on a staff team

If there's one thing I've learned, it is that applications that so often get accepted for these kinds of things rarely truly reveal people to have any actual credibility or potential. There was essentially an application last time, though one pertaining only to monks would be a waste of a subforum and would just replicate the problems we had before.

I brought forth this idea several times in the AT chat. Where is my recognition @Will (TauFirewarrior) ?

Damn

I have felt a disturbance in the force. Godspeed, LMs. You finally win.

So the monks are seen as useless and unhelpful... So you replace them with something even more boring, useless, and probably unhelpful seeing as I doubt any GM, LM, or AT in their right mind would want to roleplay these literal rocks with faces...?

+1

I was planning on having my human encounter the monks at some point in search for knowledge, I think it is a very smart idea for the AT's to play as monks, because the AT's are the first players that the newbie's actually interact with on the forums

Okay but actually though this is very possibly one of the more moronic things I've possibly come back to see, whenever I check in for no particular reason. You not only killed a group for no real reason, but you also implemented a system that has failed not once, not twice, but at least three times of 'guides' or 'mentors' or whatever you want to call it.

To top it off, you tell players not to try and RP with these Mentor 2.0s. Talk about an RPG.
