War: Tobias' Lament

As issued by his majesty King Tobias of House Staunton, 15th of the Grand Harvest 1601.

Addressed to King Marius of Haense, his Court and vassals;

It is with regret that I pen these words, but they will come as no shock to the Kingdoms of the Realm. The Kingdom of Courland draws insult from the proposed terms, the misinformation that your tribe swallowed has lacked all truth, and emphasized the idiocy of your Court. Considering the circumstances, and Haense’ account of events, we are led to believe that your entire gentry must’ve been rendered mentally incapacitated at birth. We are shocked by your Kingdom’s failure to acknowledge the apparent, abhorrent reality that has unveiled itself in recent events - do not forget that it was at our mercy that your people escaped the downfall of your Empire. We’d thought the tribulations of the past buried, we’d even come to embrace you as equals, yet you repay our good will with arrogance and aggression.

Do you not see the error of your hound dog bandits? Will you not concede that the transgressions of your own officials is what has caused this? It is plain to me, and my entire conglomerate, that the Kingdom of Haense purposefully incited this conflict between our people. It is my duty, as the Lord of my people and protectorate of the True Faith, to hold steadfast in the threats of foreign tyranny. We will rise to your threats and disregard the demands beseeched by the child king, no longer will man be under the dominion of Empire Loyalists who seek to encroach the realms Axios.

King Marius of Haense, to order the execution of our Prince Meric Staunton, a peaceful Diplomat butchered in the hearth of your court, personifies the policies of your administration and its desires to wreak havoc on Axios. Our Duke, Philip Louis Marna, who was beheaded in Karlsburg for attempting to peacefully rescue our own Princess Annabel Staunton, will be martyred for his courage in the face of your brutality. Your own heir stood at the gates of slaughter, spearheading an attack on a peaceful envoy sent to retrieve our princess in the aftermath of Philip's death.

You speak of Courlandic raids, hypocrisy ripe in your lies. Do not select what you wish from the truth, and use it to feed your nationalist agenda. We will not sit here and listen to the demands of your weakened state, when our pallet remains clean of the crimes you accuse us of. We have endured endless pillaging from your levies, scarcely leaving the confines of Aleksandria under the threat of your hosts. You are not the Empire, and without its backing you will surely share a similar fate. Remove your head from your arse King Marius and prepare for the forthcoming wars. God will save his own.

The Kingdom of Courland absolutely rejects your ultimatum, and will not allow itself to be bullied by the demands of your Kingdom.

With Knowledge Comes Power,

Signed,

HIS ROYAL MAJESTY, Tobias Staunton, King of Courland, Duke of Eastbourne, Courland, Eruthos, the Heartlands, Frederica, Cascadia, Count of Aleksandria, Riga, Westmark, Beauclair, Sundholt, Wett and Eastmark, Lord of Mt. St. Tobias, Baron of Vsenk, the Rightful Protector of the Heartlanders

Prince Frederick paces back and forth from within the confines of Baden’s Hold, having read both King Marius’ ultimatum and King Tobias’ response, it was clear to him now that peace was not, and could never be an option. The Kingdom of Haense had shown quite clearly, it’s true colours to all denizens of Axios.

“Meric, my dear nephew.” sighs Frederick. “May GOD above be my witness, you shall be avenged.” he exclaims to an empty keep shortly before falling to his knees as his head inclines.

“To all those loyal to Staunton and Courland, to all those who have perished - in my lifetime and my father's lifetime, your legacies shall now be exalted. We must now relinquish plough and scythe and turn to sword and shield - our hands have been forced.”

His being slowly rises, a more determined man stoically stands where he once knelt. “An eye for an eye, as they say - theirs is due for the plucking” he states with narrowed expression, moving throughout the keep to organise his stockpiles.

Alexander would be in the throne room reading the missive with other courtiers.

"Haense will pay for this treason." - he would say. "We pardoned their lives when we destroyed the Empire and this is how they treat us now?"

One word could be heard in the throne room, it was just a word, tiny but powerful: "WAR".

Rotger once more counts each side's crimes...

Murdering a diplomat prince before any aggression had begun, kidnapping two noblewomen and a princess, butchering one with a mace, beheading the duke sent to discuss a peaceful resolution, attacking the next envoy, harassing Courland's civilians, people unrelated to the conflict.

Being uninvolved in the Vanir raids (oh wait that's good) raiding Haense (oh wait we were attacked) killing the diplomat sent to our court. Because when you've done all of the second paragraph, you're definitely sending 'diplomats' to 'resolve' the issue directly with the King.

The Grandmaster of the Holy Order of Saint Lothar would prepare his Ordermen in order to defend their Church of the True Faith and the faithful.

"God wills it, Deus Vult!"

Av'meahr would read the respone and sigh before saying.

Well I suppose a war may bring out a few undead who were hidden. Though why do they both want to murder their resource stockpiles?

Well I watched Courland fall once I'll not watch it fall again

Av'maehr would then sigh dropping the response which he has just read and would walk off.

"Not really when men in Courlandic tabard openly backed the Brawms and other raiders before we even attempted any peace talks."

You are not the Empire

"And neither are you." Viktor would exclaim finally after reading the document.

"I will quite happily have mounted Philips head upon a pike myself, if given the opportunity. It is a shame that Philip was not within my grasp at the time of his execution. I would of had him hung drawn and quartered for his crime against his family, and would have wore the title 'Kinslayer' with pride." Says Alexander Sigismund Horen
