A Final Speech

Gone

Birds track down any citizens of Veris, bidding them to the council chamber to hear a final speech from the High Princess. As people arrive they’d find her not seated upon her throne but rather standing next to it. The signs upon the council seats all removed and a single armored figure stands just behind Ella Dune as if in protection for the small woman.

“My family! I call you such as that is what you are to me. You are not mere subjects, you are not pawns, nor toys. Each of you matters to me and from the moment I took the mantle of Steward I have felt sadness as I have seen your numbers dwindle… As if losing my own children. It became my own personal struggle to find some way to ensure your safety. To ensure that Veris would thrive and continue to be a haven for all!”

Ella looks around the crowd, studying each face carefully as she takes a deep breath. “I am sorry… I feel as if I have failed you for as anyone can see Veris does not thrive. If we were a flame we’d be flickering and about to go out but stubbornly hanging on. Part of it of course is my fault… I do not have the drive to be a leader. I never wanted the position, never had such as a goal… But I feared what would happen to a Veris left in shards. Part of the fault though also spreads out to your council. Indeed your council who reap the benefits of their position yet either stand idle or corrupt! Veris has few guards and those we do have experienced even less training. The nation is poor. Promises are made selfishly, without thought towards the nation. I made one regretted appointment to an already dysfunctional council instead of rebuilding as I should have. When I was given my throne by Kalalian Vortral I was given a nation near death and our condition stayed stable instead of recovering.”

“Now Kalalian Vortral has come out of hiding and demands Veris back… The very man who drove us into ruin in the first place. The man who let our streets be unsafe! The man who caused so many citizens to leave! He wrote to me and demanded I give him what is not mine to give. When I ignored his letters he asked to meet and indeed we met in this very room. Yet instead of bringing any of the citizens he claimed despised me, instead of bring any of you, my family, he brought with him outsiders. Kalalian Vortral brought forth dwarves and snow elves to support him yet even they backed off when he tried to pay them for my death! You heard me right, my family. Kalalian Vortral tried to pay for people to kill me when I refused to grant him power. The snow elves and dwarves showed true honor when they declined the gold, when they stated that harming an unarmed woman was wrong.” The elfess begins to pace back and forth, arms behind her back as her postures radiates pride and strength.

“Despite appearances I am tired…  I love you all but there is simply too much that needs doing. Rather than see us fall I ensured our future. I am sure many of you have heard of Devirad, the town of ‘spooks’. They, like us, allow many to seek refuge among them. I made visits to the town and what I saw surprised me. I did not see darkness nor evil but instead happy people working together. I’ve seen them band together against a rogue spirit. I’ve seen them sing and dance in a tavern. I will admit that I liked what I saw and wished to have such here. To have peace, to have people thrive. Thus when offers were proposed over the span of my reign I listened and it is now that I must announce to you I am no longer your High Princess. For roughly an elven day now I haven’t been. The same goes for the council, which I am sure you’ve noticed their names being removed and the titles blank. Devirad and their King are now your leadership. Malineer Dralguna of Devirad, Chosen of Embers, is who has kindly taken us under his wing. For the majority of you this will not cause any changes! You may continue your lives like normal. Sincerely I hope you stay with us through these changes, I myself will continue to be about and encourage you all to still see me as one you can trust. I know Veris will benefit from this… We can only rise.”

Ella slowly walks back over to her former throne only to stand before it. “I will answer any questions you may have, otherwise I wish you well as you decide if you stay or go.”

Gravelord Yldrathir would snort before a brief collection of chuckles echoed from him upon hearing the news

"So that's why we cared so much about this."

He'd bring up a hand, smacking himself in the forehead

"They're our frickin vassal."

He'd drop his hand, going back to gate duty with a sigh

"Who's the invader now huh?"

"Why didn't I listen to you, Lhindir? What you'd said about him.."  Callandri Elverhilin would plead to her now long deceased brother within the confines of her treetop abode, sat at her desk. She'd then let out a sharp exhale, quickly brushing aside the news-bearing note and getting to her feet. "Would've saved me a lot of hassle."

"Nation needs a centralized identity built around history, race or faith to thrive, lest your population becomes made up of drifters leeching off the taverns, wenches, and novelty of a new city. A population who will abandon you as soon as they sniff out newer, greener pastures, with no regard for their citizenship, or ties to the place they call home. Was Veris ever anything but a hub for these drifters?"

Said Artimec, seeing the events unfolding as a teachable opportunity to the younger members of his tribe.

"If nations were women, then the Dominion, Empire and Grand Kingdom would be faithful wives, and Veris a low bodiced tavern girl to lay with in an attic and move on the next morning."
