THE LAST HOWL

 

The night had arrived to the Grand City of Alannor. Most of the vintasian people were already sleeping in their houses, except the HeatherStone Tavern that was actually full of travellers who wanted to cover themselves from the rain and test their fighting skills in the Arena and the Main Square. 

 

Sergius Merentel was sitting in front of the main desk of his Ducal Office thinking if what he had wrote in the letter was enough. Suddenly, someone knocked on the door: “Your Grace” a voice said.

 

Sergius then opened the door to a man that resulted to be Julius Salviatti, one of his Captains: “The vintasian troops are ready, my lord” he said.

 

“Very well” said Sergius in response before starting to follow Julius outside. Suddenly, Sergius felt that someone was placing a hand on his shoulder, so he turned around and saw Ace Merentel in front of him.

 

“Where are you going?!” Ace exclaimed as he saw Sergius. 

 

“I’m gonna end this, once and for all.” Sergius replied. 

 

Ace blinked twice and then shook his head “It’s too dangerous!” he insisted.

 

Then, Sergius extended his right hand towards Ace “Take this to my son…” he said before handing him a sealed letter that had the symbol of the vintasian wolf.

A terrible darkness has returned to our world. As before, it seeks to annihilate everything that we hold dear. I now go to face it, knowing I may not return. 

 

All my life I have lived by the sword. I've fought in the War of the Two Emperors, I’ve seen emperors fall, and watched brave heroes die in vain. 

 

Our line has always ruled with wisdom and strength. And I know you will show restraint when exercising your rightful power. But the truest victory, my son, is stirring the hearts of the vintasian people. 

 

I still believe as I did, that peace is the noblest aspiration, but remember that to preserve it, you must be willing to fight! FOR ARCAS!

 

I tell you this, for when my days have come to and end, you shall be Duke.

Ace simply nodded in agreement to Sergius after taking the parchment. Sergius then walked outside to meet the vintasian soldiers that were there gathered in spite of the rain.

 

Sergius proceeded to get on his horse and then started jogging towards the Kingdom of Curonia whilst his troops started to follow him.

After a long trip, Sergius and his vintasian troops  finally arrived to Avalain, the capital of the Kingdom of Curonia. They passed the main gate and got to the main square where they found an old knight.

 

“Ah, Ser Graham” Sergius waved to him 

 

“Lord Merentel, I would never have expected your arrival! Thank GOD you’re here.” Graham proceeded to give Sergius a pat on the back.

 

“Let this be the hour when we draw swords together, my friend” Sergius said. Graham then nodded in agreement and both of them unsheathed their swords and prepared for the upcoming battle.

 

There were many people in Avalain at that day, in fact, the main square was crowded by people from Rubern, Haense, Kaedrin, Adria, Fenn, and many others who had also attended the call for aid issued by King Pierce Devereux.

 

Suddenly, the sky turned dark and all sense of happiness quickly disappeared from the people there gathered and Sergius and Graham started to hear screams coming from the other side of the walls.

 

At the same time, in this side of the walls two Voidal Horrors started to emerge from the ground.

 

 

 

After remaining in a defensive position for a while with his shield up, Sergius got tired of the situation as none was attacking those voidal beasts. That’s why he then decided to charge.

 

 

Many other people then followed him to the charge against the Voidal Horror located near the curonian tavern. Sergius continued stabbed several times the monster’s leg with his sword.

 

 

The attack against the Voidal Horror resulted effective, as the muscles and tendons of the voidal monster broke apart.

 

 

However, when It seemed that the voidal horror was already defeated, the monster slammed Sergius and knocked him back, pushing him away several meters until Sergius crushed into the curonian walls.

 

 

Sergius then dropped his sword and exhaled his last breath before laying dead on the floor.

[!] The news would arrive to the citizens of the Duchy of Vintas. The Duke is dead. A funeral in the Grand City of Alannor shall be held in a saint day in the Cathedral of St. Tobias ((Tomorrow at 2pm EST)).

Pierce would walk amongst the carnage of the battle, letting a sigh fall loose from his lips as he looked between survivors and the dying alike. Once the rubble had cleared, a monument in honor of the survivors had been erected, with the names of the fallen inscribed upon it. Just underneath the name of a familiar Olog lay the name of the Vintasian Duke, once scorned by Curonia, now dying not only for it, but all of Arcas.

 

Graham, though late, would walk amongst the Seven Skies, meeting Sergius at the gates.

Lyam mourns the loss of his Duke, and relative. “May you rest well in the Seven Skies, Sergius. Taken way too soon from this world. Whatever the World may say of you now is irrelevant. You kept you head up high, despite those of lesser stature who so mockingly belittled you. All in our family should strive to follow in your example, aswell as the honourable men and women of Vintas.” he proudly signs the Lorraine.

Wilheim purses a lip as the Duke of Vintas perished, tapping his hand on the desk. He would take a deep sigh with a nod of respect towards the missive as he heard of the news. “Well, I remember marching alongside and against you back in my day. May your soul rest in peace.”

Jaonos would start crying, "he was the best duke we ever had he gave his life for the people of Arcas in the battle against the voidal horror. We should honour him well, that he may rest in peace. He did what he promissed, he purified the name of Vintas again. Only I still deeply regret that I couldnt safe him. His battle is now over, may he rest in peace forever. "

Andromeda Merentel would stand in the corner of the tavern as she sips on some of her apple juice as she slowly reads the letter and then lets out a huge cry “Father! H-he’s gone! “ she would then go to drop everything and run out of the tavern but before she makes it out fully she trips on herself “I will miss you father!” she’d say as she goes to sit and cry into the ground and then slowly falls asleep on the rough, sandy, hot ground.
