An Empire versus a Child

A place for all, or a place for none.

Which is it? To some, it’s a place of freedom. For someone such as I, it’s considered a prison.

Me, a child, hiding from an empire. Who thought it would ever come to this? A single child, an orphan.

I know I would most likely be killed if I were to turn myself in, it is simply not an option.

Even if you did realize your mistakes.

I will remember this for the rest of my days.

Three acts of treason hung over my head like a noose made of rat chewed rope,

That will snap once weight is put upon it,

Setting its prisoner running free.

Albeit with some neck pain of course, no?

Oren is claimed to be a place where one can speak freely, yet my free speech is punished.

Is it because I am a lesser to them? Simply an elf to be shut up?

Or because I’m a woman, though I am still hardly one at this young age.

Being young doesn’t forbid me from having opinions.

And you know that, don’t you?

Of course you do. For you want people to follow you, as mindless drones to listen to every word you speak from your wretched mouth.

And echo in monotone, ‘Oren is surely the best nation.’

Alas, you have not made a drone out of me, have you?

No, no you have not.

Signed, Mirabella Violet

Rha'kir is surprised as he read the poem. He felt struck, and weirdly enough, found the words of this child to hit with more impact than any verse after did. He is in fact in shock, at how beautifully this poem was written and how dreadful its meaning is.

Solomon Takezo looks from one letter to another, the poems side by side as with her call to court. His legs cross, one foot tapping against the wooden floor.

"That they would try to bring a child in for speaking her mind is... truly... something. To be frightened of a child's words speaks whole volumes of truth, and... really only cements her lament. Of all the ways to handle it, this is the worst."

A deep sigh escapes him, eyes closing as he considers it all.

"At times I wonder... if Oren's heart lies with their God, or instead their money-pockets and pride."

"How desperate do Orenians have to be to label children traitors," tuts the young voice of Esther Castile, clicking her tongue once in her musings.

Mayor A.S.H. would look over the prose and decide to return to this preferred method of expression, his trusty journal. He would recline in his chair in the Mayor's office and bring the light brown book closer onto his lap.

Dear Diary,

I believe education could fix this young person's faulty disposition. There obviously is a lack of understanding of the laws, customs, cultures, and norms of the Empire. They seem capable of poetry but lack problem solving or any other developed mode of critical thinking. This young mind seems ripe to be recruited by the enemy into their child soldier detachment. I am unsure the proper wording for their military arrangements due to their propaganda as ragtag fighters and a clear influx of foreign fighters from far off lands. The similarities in stature may be why the Sedanites are entreating with the Dwed, they quite literally see eye to eye. Good one Mister Mayor! If this young one hates Oren so much she can just walk out of the lands and go elsewhere. Maybe this dips into that new fangled psychology in which we examine the unhealthy obsession with an object. They seem to have Oren on the mind and pen more then healthy and they should consider a little vacation. I heard Sutica is nice this time of year but heard a whisper it is difficult to get a house for some odd reason. Maybe they would enjoy the feudalistic lordling culture of the far south! I do pray that the mental deficiency can be fixed by some act from the City Assembly or House of Commons, they love to pass bills on education!

Edward Mith crumples up his copy of the poem and greedily shoveled it into his mouth, chewing ravenously as wet pulp spews from his rotten lips. "Beeegh! Tastes like bull-****!" He curses, snot dripping into his open jaw. He slurps the loogy up like a fat grub, sucking it up like a strand of pasta. Smack smack smack. "Too many eeeh, child'en around. We could use less'f 'em. Good on Oren, only good thing that ugly Prov-i-dence's ever done."

Valent would add - "If people say that children aren't traitors, why is she taking such an active role in the matters of politics, state and diplomacy! It's clearly not the place for underaged people to mix in..."

"I will be happy to help send these Sedanites to the place they belong...which is obviously in a prison cell." Kelhus would smile, soon he will be in the ISA, despite his young age and he is ready to fight for the Emperor.
