Minor Mentalism, the Mind Opens to the Veil

Overview

 

In ages past, tails tell of a Void Mage having the powers to open up their minds and use their thoughts to break and dominate the wills of others. Such an art was known as Mentalism. Respected and equally feared, those who practiced this art knew the full extent of the mind….  Alas though does the magi weep, for the Void is an uncaring mistress to her many lovers, and what magic she gives, she shall take. The art of Mentalism lost to the ages, thought never to be rediscovered.  However the Void in all her hunger forgets that those who practice her art are as tenacious as they are greedy for her secrets, and while the Void Mages of today will never unlock the full potential of the art of the past, they can at least grasp at it’s straws and unlock what little abilities they once had.

 

Explanation

 

Minor Mentalism is a shattered, fragmented art of voidal lore pieced together by what scholars remember the ways of proper mentalism fondly. Unable to let go of the past, they have put together this minor feat of magic to reproduce what little amount of the arcane art they once used. While never truly being the same or as strong as it once was, Minor Mentalism allows for magi to garner that sense of power the mind once gave.

Redlines

-Minor Mentalism is a feat based magic, and requires a valid feat application to learn.

-Minor Mentalism is self taught, but requires another with Minor Mentalism to unlock the ‘mind's potential’ (more below).

-Minor Mentalism requires a stable connection to the Void to learn.

-Requires at least 2 Magic Slots dedicated to the Void to Learn

-While there is no time limit to how fast it takes for a Void Mage to learn all the abilities of Minor Mentalism, it would realistically take them at least one too two ooc weeks to have gleaned all the abilities they can. Thus while not an exact rule, a Void Mage should take their time before they have unlocked all the abilities of Minor Mentalism.

 

 

Spells and Abilities

 

Telepathy

 

Telepathy is a unique spell one who practices Minor Mentalism can learn. The aspects of the magic is quite simple, and allows one with Minor Mentalism to ‘project’ their thoughts wordlessly into the minds of those around them. Those who learn Minor Mentalism often allow telepathy to take over common, regular speech as they become used to using it.

Redlines

-Telepathy is a means to which a Void Mage may project their thoughts as words into the minds of others, allowing for communication without spoken words.

-Telepathy works on a group wide basis, requiring that all within hearing range be able to hear it. This follows regular, mechanical emote types (whisper-quite-roleplay-shout).

-Telepathy can be summarized as a ‘flavourful’ method of speaking as your words are heard in the mind, rather than through the mouth.

-Telepathy can NOT be used as a substitute for abilities that require you to actually speak verbal words.

-Can not be used to somehow gain a combat advantage. Telepathy does not cause someone to lose focus on tasks they are doing, unless such focus would have been broken by someone speaking regularly to them.

-Due to the non-combat nature of this magic, it does not require any emote count to use, and uses little to no mana for any mage using it.

-Due to the flavoured aspect of this magic, one does not need to directly connect to the void to use it.

 

 

 

Precise Telepathy

 

Unlike normal telepathy, precise telepath is a manner in which a Void Mage may direct their telepathic abilities to a singular target by opening their thoughts to the Void, and allowing them to pass through the Veil into the mind of another.

Redlines

-Precise Telepathy, unlike regular Telepathy, requires 3 emotes to cast. One to connect, one to ‘project’ the message into the void, and one for it to then be sent and heard by the target.

-Precise telepathy follows regular bird rules, in which it must be properly emoted in order for it to be valid. Due to cases where a magi may already be connected to the Void, an additional charge emote will be needed as to make sure the spell always takes 3 emotes to cast.

-In a combat situation, a ‘physical’ sign of some message being sent must occur on the second emote. This can be via a thin beam of energy leaving the eyes of the mage, or by a subtle, strange ring being made.

-If the mage is forced to disconnect before the 2nd emote, the spell fails.

 

 

The Opened Mind

 

Minor Mentalism allows a void mage to feel the surface thoughts of other magi who also possess this art, allowing for them to easily identify with each other and commune with shared thoughts if they so please.

-Allows a magi with this feat to detect if another magi with this feat is in their general area.

-The range of this detection is 3 meters.

-A void mage can, if they so choose, close off their mind, making themselves undetectable to this ability.

 

 

Shared Thoughts

 

When two void mages who both are able to practice Minor Mentalism are in the same area, they may allow the thoughts of their minds to linger together, allowing for swift, easy communication that can be more ‘private’ between the mage. To the mages, the conversation would feel emotionally intense, as they allow their minds to be read and read the mind of the other. To those not apart of this ‘circling’, the magi seemingly just stare at each other, connected to the void.

-Shared thoughts can only be done with another Void Mage who has Minor Mentalism

-Shared thoughts allows for two mages to have a ‘private’ conversation around others without people being able to hear them.

-In order to commit to the ‘circling’ of shared thoughts, both magi must connect to the void and make eye contact.

-Shared thoughts allows up to 4 void mages to communicate in this manor, allowing all the magi to hear each other’s thoughts as they speak in an open manor

-Can not be used to gleam or steal information from another magi. At most, the magi would be able to better understand the emotions the other is feeling.

 

 

Mind Opening

At times, a Void Mage may wish to open up the minds of their fellows and allow them to use Minor Mentalism. By using their own mana, along with the mana from another source, a void mage allow another to learn this feat.

-This is the method of which a Void Mage may spread the Feat to another

-The void mage to learn must be with the mage who processes this feat, as well as by proximity of another source of mana (Mana Obelisk, Voidal Tear, Voidstalker, etc).

-Once the ritual is completed, the Void Mage may make their Feat Application for this feat with the one who 'gave' it to them linking their application (that is at least 4 weeks old).

-Due to needing time to allow their mind to adjust to the new changes Minor Mentalism brings, a Void Mage may not use this ability until they have had the Feat for up to four ooc weeks.

Purpose

 

The purpose of this lore is rather simple in my own opinion, to fill in an interesting, niche aspect of magic that is not around: Telepathy! The name Minor Mentalism comes more so from me not knowing what old mentalism was capable of, and while the name may indeed be subjected to change, the main magic of this lore will not. Minor Mentalism exists to allow for a ‘creative’ way for mages to speak, and it is my hope that it will allow for some more intresting rp dynamics between mages and non-mages.

This is my last one for the week mate. Had to get it out since I honestly had an empty doc on my drive titled this for like... 3 weeks Dx

Mental Magic has been through like four different rewrites, and all have been denied. It really is great that you've got the drive to do this kinda stuff, but Mental Magic is one of those concepts that very likely won't find a place on the server again. Good job, but can't say I support this one.

Nice lore and sounds like a good addition, a good concept like the last one i read. You have some good stuff coming up with your writing, so keep it up, cant wait to see what you gonna write next. +1
