The Choice of General Hieran Melphestaus

“If life were predictable it would cease to be life, and be without flavour”

[!]A depiction of Hieran Melphestaus, in 3rd brigade officer uniform

The end of the tripartite war was seen by Orens citizens as an opportunity, one to prosper and grow. One to grasp and expand, fix upon the mistakes made clear to the empire.

Appointments were made. The Imperial Council of State raised Philip Galbraith to Minister of Foriegn affairs, and myself, Lord Hieran Melphestaus, to General of the Imperial Legion. Times seemed promising, the rebuild of the empire to one not looked down upon, but seen as what it once was. A nation of unmatched strength.

But such paradise cannot last. A few saints hours in, public unrest began. The city bustled with unforeseen rallies, with no explanation. And a few saints minutes after, the empire was torn in 2.

On one side, for the Holy Orenian Empire to stand as it always had, Peter IV.

And on the side of great change, to a Kingdom of Oren, Frederick I.

And so,

The stance of Lord Hieran Livarai de Melphestaus, the Minister of War, General of the Imperial Legion and Malin’tir of the Ebonwood Principatus:

“I shall not stand on either side of this petty Civil war. Men playing a boys' game -  for what? A title that puts them above the common man. After 40 years of service, I was appointed as the General of the Legion, for a self proclaimed king to rip it apart. It was a disappointing display for all parties. My leave shall be taken from the Orenian Empire, or Kingdom, or whatever you wish to call it. The Legion shall choose its path due to their allegiances. Whether it be at the command of Sir Ezekiel Moores or Viktor Darkwood. The Ebonwood Principatus remains under the command of my dearest brother, Minuvas Melphestaus. I shall take refuge in the Kingdom of Haense, having met their Lord Marshal it shall be my place of home while the raging tides of this childish fight settle. I wish for a stable Empire. Who will be able to lead that? Only time shall tell…”

[!] And with such news being passed around, the once prestigious Hieran Melphestaus, retires to a one man apartment in the Kingdom of Haense. His great days in the 3rd brigade and the town of Ephesius, merely a memory...

Sir Ezekiel sighed as the letter was presented to him.

"No rest for the wicked," He remarked with a dry chuckle, setting aside the piece of parchment and rising from his seat.

Nicole saw this missive with a sadden look, she sat on her couch thinking roughly at early morning dawn, when everything was quiet.

Johann Barclay took a moment to reflect, as the man he had tried to capture within the walls of Ebonwood and who had in turn tried to kill him at the fields of Reinmar, now stood with him at Karosgrad's military district.

At least they could have tea, now..

“Apathy is death, to let others decide your fate is shameful. Let there be no confusion Peter IV is the rightful Emperor.” John Casimir comments as he heard the news.

A translucent figure would smile, as he saw the old sign the letter, he would mutter to himself, "You are wise old friend," he would then take a sip from a flask, "far wiser than I was." He would chuckle, "Keep the mace safe, and may GOD protect you!"

With that the figure would sign the Lorriane and would disappear.

Dr. Primrose Gendik blinked in surprise at the missive. She didn't take Hieran for a Haenser, but good for him. Away from the hell that spoiled the soil of Orenian lands, he could be free from the wrought of fighting friends. She'd fold the missive, setting it into her journal to save for later. "I'll be sure to have tea with him in Karosgrad one of these days."

A long dead Viscount and Major in the Imperial State Army peered proudly towards Hieran. Robert was pleased that he made the right choice for a successor. No matter the choices Hieran made Robert was no doubt proud. "Godspeed Melphestaus" the Galbraith uttered from the void.
