The Skirmish at Lemon Hill

Lordlings of spring and hastily armed peasants was what comprised the small militia at Enswerp. Zealous partisans of a United Heartlands, bound by the Marnan’s Creed, or unknowing locals under command of their lord, Prince John, joined arms for various reasons that day, for matters that the historian’s will concern themselves with in the future, but for those in the present, we know only of the actions that transpired.

 

A small legion patrol, numbering anywhere from forty to fifty, arrived in the village on the morning of the 12th of Sun’s Smile. Whispers among the Marnan Brigade, newly-arrived to Fort Alba, had it that a warrant for their leader’s arrest, the elf named Ser Tiber, was the cause behind it. Others thought it was merely routine, nothing far from what was ordinary. These riders, no doubt suspecting anger, but not hostility, came across a harrowing sight: one-hundred and thirty or so militamen clearing the small forest of Enswerp, preparing Fort Alba for a siege. It was not long before the laboring soldiers spotted the legionaries and readied their father’s pikes and new-bought swords.

 

For a few minutes, the only attacks were verbal, as insults were traded back and forth around the Greasy Spoon, where the two hosts met. Ser Tiber, with the authority of a seasoned commander, kept his men at bay, but held firm in his demands. The legion patrol was to leave, and their authority was considered null in the lands loyal to the United Heartlands. The legion, also led by a calmer head in the boy Pyotr Draskovic, withdrew peacefully, and no blows were traded. Had peace been in the humors of that day’s air, that would be all that occurred, but the designs of fate would have it otherwise.

 

Although Ser Tiber and Prince John had kept good order, there were many green men and women within the ranks. A few slipped away after the backs were turned, either to see the legion cavalry off, or to accost them down the road. Less than an hour after the Marnan Brigade and those of Enswerp had forced the legion to retreat, arms were drawn again, though this time it was at Lemon Hill. Some locals, hearing shouts and clash of steel, ran back to Enswerp to alert Ser Tiber, perhaps the one man who could bring the fight to a close. Under the banner of John Valentius, the host marched out towards Lemon Hill.

 

It was there that the skirmish ensued. It was a brief fight, and its details are not worth expanding upon too greatly. Either a man from Enswerp had attacked a legion horseman first, or a legion horseman had attacked a man from Enswerp first. The truth was of no matter, and shall be discovered later. Ser Tiber led his men ably and with confidence. It was likely his lance, though perhaps another’s, perhaps Viktor Bartham’s, that stabbed the leg or foot of Pyotr Draksovic, it was difficult to see, who was forced to flee once again with his men. One had been wounded, none had died, but blood had been spilled on the ground of Lemon Hill in the name of a fight for the future of the Heartlands. Would these blows merely be another in a series of long escalations, or was something greater, something more terrible, soon to emerge from these embers and burst into a great blaze?

 

Yet another matter for the historians of the future to look at.

Unbeknownst to the Marnantine Protector, history was set into motion with the advent of steel clashes. Yet all Tiber could reserve to his thoughts now was upholding Unity Above All.

Having spent much of his recent life in Enswerp or Solgaard, Adrian is unfamiliar with many of the names involved in this encounter. Perhaps, as the war progresses, he will get to attach certain names to faces and write a fuller, richer account of what transpires.

John Valentinus of Enswerp looked across the rally of men that stood before the ramparts of Fort Alba. He watched as the trees were felled to fuel the passion of himself & Ser Tiber. A sense of pride overtook him, but deep down a dreadful ache lurked at the thought of what was to come.

"Heartlander patriotism comes from all walks of life within our world. Everyone within our Heartlandic society wishes to see our two provinces thrive, yet we are being undermined by those who only seek it's destruction. It is not treachery to kill and destroy traitors." "ZKAAAAHH MI" the goblin screams in horror as Albert speaks, having been in deep thought. He'd point out this is hypocritical by a group abusing the fact the King of Aaun isn't here - but he needs to remove a few bricks before hand...
