SÖHNE UND TÖCHTER VON REINMAR,

 

GATHER HEED, my brethren in Horen, and hear the words of a Chieftain among you, Leon of Reinmar. Listen well, Gaspardlings of Ravenmire, and relatives in the Heartland and you, Lords of the Raev in the north, Adunic and Balianite lords in the South and East, Hirdmen warriors, and Tiberias of Middenland of most importance. Hearken my words and be still;

 

Tiberias of Middenland, I call unto you from the high hills to your stronghold in the North. You, who have raised the spear and spoken with fire to your folk, swore an oath to bring down Charles, King of Aaun, and pledged before all men that you would see him delivered to the hands of the High Pontiff. 

 

For your flock and James Marcel, you have bound yourself in oath to the Holy Church taking shelter under their decrees for the fate of the King in Aaun, and proclaimed your assent in upholding the decrees which their hands would work. You thus did in your declaration, claim to seek justice. Justice, which was given unto you by my kinfolk, for was it not my grandfather, the merciful and Blessed Caius, who brought your people back into the fold, healing what was broken, making your bond with the Church strong once more, that you were not torn asunder, that your claims for justice were indeed trusted?

 

You have named the crimes of this King, and for this cause, you have summoned a host of warriors, heathens, and allies alike, including the stout Dwarves of Urguan. With your spear lifted high, you swore that justice would be done, not only by the edge of your blade, but by the word of the bearers of the holy Laurel, by the judgement of the Priesthood. And so it has come to pass, that we too have seen with our own eyes the judgement of the High Pontiff upon that King this day, whose lands now by decree lie under the rule of the Mother Church.

 

I am reminded of Gaspard, your forefather, and too the forefather of your cause. Though a foe to my father and his sire before him, he was a man of honor. He did not rush to battle without cause, nor did he stain his sword with the blood of the innocent. His blade was drawn only for the causes he deemed worthy. 

 

Now, seeing your missives, your declaration of war, and your pursuit of so-called justice, I ask you, Tiberias, are you of the same iron? Was your war truly waged to cast down a so-called tyrant in the name of the Holy Church, or do your eyes hunger for the land and the glory of conquest?

 

For it is so that the lands of Aaun are now under the hand of the Vicar of God, the High Pontiff, to whom you swore your blade for the sake of justice. You spoke of deferring the judgement of the King to the High Pontiff, now Regent who has, by his word and will, brought down judgement without need of your sword. 

 

So I am the Chieftain over Reinmar, I say unto you, and let all lords under the heavens hear it: If you seek justice, as you have claimed, then your spear shall rest. But if your march continues despite this, then all shall see that your heart is blackened by the lust for land and power, and you will dishonor your slain brother, James Marcel, trodding over his corpse in vie for glory, land and power.

 

For it is also true that you, alongside Bo of Ravenmire, have long decried the words of my brethren in the Church and in other lands who spoke against your war—those who damned it an Imperial conquest. And so it is that you have branded them as false prophets, stirrers of discord, theorists, and rabble-rousers. 

 

But behold, for if you should, by breaking your oath and despite all your words, still march upon the High Pontiff, then know this: I, Leon of Reinmar, and surely the other Princes of the Canondom shall rise, with sword and shield, in defence of the Holy Church. 

 

This oath I swear before all that is sacred.

Barry Blackworth raises his brow upon hearing word of the missive. "It's odd they assume we march on the Kin Slayer for their Kin Slaying and not for their murder and assault on Blackworth civilians and attempt on our Soverign's life."

Gottfried Barclay muttered a prayer to Saint Tylos upon returning home the night all had transpired, hopeful that those living in Ravenmire, and whomever else had been addressed, would see sense and lay down their arms now that 'divine justice', as his kinsmen had called it, had been had.

"Not dense, Gaspard. I will not lower myself to dishing out childhood insults. They are misinformed of our intentions. The Reinmaren are good folk, stalwart folk. I do not seek quarrel with them, but they have been gravely misinformed as to our intentions. We do not march solely for the act of kinslaying, but to avenge our fallen Knights and friends, to avenge the grievous wounds dealt unto our people. If the men of Reinmar only knew our true cause, I am sure they would be much more sympathetic."

 

The Duke moved to pat his former squire, now knight's shoulder. It was then that a sigh released from the learned man. 

 

"My fight is not with the Reinmaren. I pray to GOD on high that those who would name us such cruel things come to see our point of view in time."

"Right, so why are you attacking the High Pontiff for the crimes of a banished king? I don't recall the Pontiff sending bandits after you, nor Godwin, King in Aaun!" says Adelmar in retort, since Constantine seemed to witness him complain!
