An extremely long sheepskin paper is found on the noticeboard of Lenfarthing, it appears to be adorned with small splotches of blood, 

 

Dear 'aflin's o' Lenfarthin',

 

Through the years we 'ave witnessed many 'obbit folk come an' go, burrows abandoned, an' taken by new families. 'owevah, i' has become too hard t' keep track o' whos still livin' 'ere, whos packed up an' left, an' whos jus' bein' a grumpy 'alflin'. I ask tha' ya write ya family membahs livin' in lenfarthin down on this 'ere papah.
