this is just a thought idk if anyone else agrees... but my fav type of woman archetype is the woman is strong through her femineity, rather than being strong due to being more masculine.

Morals aside, I think villains can be heroes in their own community. From this non-traditional perspective, I believe a hero is someone who is willing to do anything for their cause.
Whether that be a Lich making a great stride for the darkspawn community.
A Paladin sacrificing themselves to save others.
Or even a King/Queen who did a lot for their Kingdom.

How does the notion of island expansions strike you? Ex: a small themed island is added to the world, say 1000x1000. Event line ensues and once it's over it's viable, playable land.
