Zahrer plays a long mournful tune from his old bagpipes. The sound is familiar and slow as the shouts of "Fire and Stone" fill the city.

55 minutes ago, Joe / joenaj / Yemekar said:

The Mad Emperor wishes for his rule to be absolute. For the genocide of non-humans and anyone who opposes him. The dwarves stand as one of the last bastions to freedom from the oppression of Oren.

A very non-human wood elf trudged down a forest past with a spear in hand. A dark green pattern of antlers were painted across his cheeks in a tribal fashion. His silhuoetted form approached entered a verdant clearing, gulls circling overhead.

His lithe form approached the center of the little meadow, where a wooden statue of a mighty stag-horned man stood. The elf knelt before the pagan idol and laid forth the beard of a dwarf in front of it, murmuring a poignant prayer.

"Lord of our hunts, I present you my trophy, for your watchful eye brings us triumph, your blessing makes us fierce. Give me the strength to become the warrior I was and bring a swift end to this war, and all dwed I bring down shall be in your name."

Since everyone else was doing it he shouted something.

"Arrows from elderwood!"

He walked back into the deep wilds with a smile. Hell, he could see it catching on.

Emery's digits clench his handkerchief, bringing it to his forehead to wipe the beads of sweat gathering upon it. He releases a deep breath, clenching his teeth. "I need to join the winning side..." He mutters.

"Come with me, dwarf-lords, to Felsen - we're off to strong-arm Oren!"

These had been the words of the madman Grand King of Urguan, Midgor Ireheart, on that fateful day in 1529 where he and his host had marched to the Imperial capital. There they had delivered their cold demands, not preceded by any act of military aggression on the part of the human empire. Oren as a nation was to disband, with all vassals to be released from their fealty, or it was to be war, said the dwarven representatives in their skulduggery. The Emperor had turned them down.

It had been twelve years since that day, and the dwarven ploy had turned against them. Midgor Ireheart died from complications surrounding his mouth-sores, succeeded by some former wheel-maker of little renown. The Empire had destroyed the Urguanite hosts countless times, and was now leading a counter-offensive deep into their sovereign territory. Of course, there was the usual call of the conscientious objector: 'Warmonger John' was just one of the more kindly names he had been dubbed with.

Yet within his conscience, the Emperor knew that in pursuing this war, he was doing God's work. An extermination of the dwarves was not what he desired. On the contrary, he remembered the hours he had spent planning with his friend Uldar during that Grand King's reign in the last decade, plotting to arrange a partnership between their nations and usher in a golden age for the both of them.

Of course, his outlook since then had changed somewhat, for the human race could never be safe while an independent Urguan yet stood. It, along with all trappings of the old dwarf order, had to be torn down and built anew.
