Gone, but not forgotten

~A crisp breeze rolls through Dunshire~

Madeline Applefoot was a good sort of halfling, as many recall. As apt to the tankard as to the pipe, and always a good cheer. She acquired many titles, Sheriff of Mapleshire, Mayor of Dunshire, Deputy of Dunshire, Elder of Dunshire.... It was a long life, and a full one at that.

She was born in Reedsborough as Madeline Applebrook, with her brother being Merriadolph Applebrook. She grew up with her Applebrook family, having fun and playing beneath the trees. When the villages moved location, so did she. Eventually, she saw her brother die in the village of Pendlemere, and with that her heart was left empty, an emptiness that was never truly filled, not even after her marriage to Harold Withfoot (which created the Applefoot family, a merge of the two last names), and not even after giving birth to four healthy halfling chilren.

Onwards from Pendlemere the halflings went, founding the village of Mapleshire, where Madeline Applefoot further connected herself with her fellow halflings, even leading them at times when she was Sheriff. She drank, sang, and protected the shire, and wrote quite a few books along the way (A few of which are still in the Dragur Library!). Her presence helped keep the halflings together, and everyone loved and hated here in their own unique way.

In Mapleshire she met Hektor Blackwood, one of the best friends they ever had. Together, they had all sorts of adventures, discussed many things, nearly turned the halflings Canonist, and helped turn the halflings into what they are today.

After she traveled to the new realm of Atlas in the Mapleshire Pumpkin Boat, she helped found Dunshire, the current halfling village in Atlas. She met more halflings, such as Bernard Oakstool (Who she'd help found the ideas of Bernardism with), and Angelica Woodstock (Who she'd laugh and work with many times).

However, all good things must come to an end, and Madeline Applefoot's life was no different. A biggun sneaked up on her whilst all the other halflings of Dunshire tried to protect Benjamin from harm, and she was slashed in the back with a sword, fatally wounding her.

Goodbye, Madeline Applefoot. You will not be forgotten by your fellow halflings.

Madeline, by Hobbs Burrows

I have often been told,

Of a she-halfling so bold,

Who takes up a shovel,

And after a tussle,

Will soon have you bent over double!

Now this lass says 'Harold,

I know you're a cabbage,

But the truth is not savage,

And though you have baggage,

To me you're the perfect package!'

Dunshire is lucky to have her,

that we all know and agree,

And if you do doubt listen to me,

Without drink or cheer,

Your charm crystal clear,

What a sad world it would be!

Having heard of the news of Madeline's death spreading like wildfire among Dunshire's gossiping Shire-ladies, which put a halt to the days tilling of vegetable patches and tending of flocks, Ernie trudges home, sits on his sofa, and stares at a picture on the wall by Nodian Elric. There was little of village and Halfling life that was untouched by Madeline Applefoot. From the sunny Dunshire days that never seemed to end, to the care and solicitude with which she treated every proper Halfling and Dunshire villager.

Ernie lifts the painting off the wall and looks at it closely. It shows every Dunshire Halfling and their children sat underneath the ale garden tent. Pints of Branborough Buzz, Withfoot Cider and Applebrook Porter in every hand and smiles on every face. The painting had signatures of everyone from the village beneath it, and the ink on Madeline's name began to smear as a tear fell on the painting.

Spoiler

A man in black armor served a platter of cannoli in Dunshire, offering one to each visitor. Altough his apperance in armor seems grim his tone seems calm, yet loaded with sorrow "For the halfling that can even eat a fully fledged mercenary under the table!" he raised the platter and stayed for a while to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and serenity that only the halflings will ever know.
