Conduct During Times of War

______________________________________________________

Preamble:

The land of Arcas finds itself entangled in war once more. And as with every war, deaths are to be had, however, death is normal, and everyone must meet his or her time eventually. The act of war is as natural to us as is taking a breath of air or to feast for sustenance. But there are acts of violence in war which are beyond cruel, teetering on barbaric, which must and should be outlawed and condemned by all nations, lest they too welcome such barbarism to ravage their own lands.

Acts Deemed too Cruel for War:

  • Anyone who cannot properly defend themselves should not face harm during war.

    • To raise a weapon towards one who cannot defend himself is cruel and unjustified. When one who is defenseless is killed it is not war, it is cold murder.

  • Children in no way, shape, or form should be harmed.

    • Too many innocent lives have been taken during the course of this ongoing conflict, and too many of them have been youths. To kill a child means one has no regard for life in itself, and values nothing but taking pleasure in the murder of children.

  • Men who surrender are to be left unharmed.

    • Should a man submit, he should be left unharmed. For a man to take the life of another who’s already submitted is a most heinous crime indeed.

  • Prisoners of war should be kept in humane conditions.

    • No prisoner should be subjected to the harsh environments when in captivity. Prisoners should, at bare minimum, be fed, clothed, and reside in livable conditions.

  • Prisoners should not be immediately executed.

    • Often times, a prisoner is captured and in many cases, the immediate result is to execute them even if they have no play in this war. This practice is hereby deemed cruel and unjust.

Afterword:

This document does not lay out international laws for the nations to follow, rather its aim is to prevent the loss of innocents during times of war. We have seen too many people die as casualties. Listed above are the acts which under no circumstances, should ever be employed or occur. As time moves on, so must we and the vile practices of the past should not be carried to the present. We must do everything in our power to protect our citizens from the horrors of war. The nations which sign agree to uphold and try to prevent these cruel acts from occurring.

Signed,

HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY, Peter III Anthony, Holy Orenian Emperor, King of Renatus, Curon, Salvus, and Seventis, Protector of the Heartlanders, Highlanders, and Farfolk, etcetera.

“Finally, people are seeing the light and beginning to realise the utter barbarity of war. If only my own Rights of Man had caught on during the last war.” Dietrich rejoices at the news. He cries tears of joy that a document like this has been signed by the Emperor.

Owyn Adrian Talraen de Rennes reads the document from his study as he chuckles at the last paragraph, “Then it is international law if no nation is to allow it to happen. This is just Jus cogens.”

”A strikingly fresh bit of common sense. Interesting that it was posted during a tense period.” The bounty hunter agreed with the message, nodding in approval. ”Unfortunately, I don’t think anyone who should follow these guidelines knows how to read.”
