Whats with Lotc?: The issue of Transphobia, Homophobia and Racism

The best way to play lotc is to simply not be involved with groups OOCly.

One example of this and also main reason I don't participate in lotc wars anymore either is just the Sheer quantity of slurs people say in every war discord ive ever been in. Seen so many players I ain't naming who'd just join, immediately asked "can I say the n word here" and proceeded to spam it. (Also spam posting fetish **** happens More Than Expected but thats a whole other issue). It mightve gotten marginally better since I joined, but still: lotc players just really love to say slurs the second they can get away with it.

I always keep stuff to myself to avoid slurs and discrimination, quite sad.

Most punishment these people get is a slap on the cheek and they'll be back at it again.

Go through the proper channels with such things, in terms of reporting, is the only method that would actually be fair in any way.  Any other method would involve literal political purges OOCly, which is a disturbing concept that will create more suffering than LOTC's yet seen.  If somebody is harassing another player with XYZ slurs, then they should be reported and dealt with, but blanket political purges of anybody whom disagree's with the current political atmosphere will cause the server to literally collapse.     -My opinion, being a longtime LOTCer since 2011.

I do agree with you on this, and I know you to be a man of great character whose morals I'd agree with as opposed to OP, but I also don't think they're wrong with the assertion this server has a population of borderline, if not blatant, racists. 

The truth is that most of us back then were young, influenced by a certain crowd of people, with hyper-masculine and or aggressive behaviors, often times corralled into problematic views and even in some cases radicalized. While I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as it was, and that the "pestery" and bad faith groups of the last five years certainly overshadowed the toxicity of the prior five, I'd bet that never really went away.

I appreciate the niceties, my view is such things require a bottom-up solution, the cliques themselves have the right to self-regulate the behavior of folk in their clique; let them do the work of such.  If you find yourself surrounded by toxicity, leave that clique and go elsewhere, it doesn't require some STASI-tier political purge with informants in every discord, people worried that the moment they offend somebody its a perma-ban, and let's not forget a system like that will be abused OOCly by political evildoers to gain in mineman fantasy politics

I again agree with you, I just know some of the shit that people used to get away with, myself included, probably shouldn't have. I don't know if bottom up ever works, because online cliques always have extreme characteristics due to their imbalanced nature, but I do think that it really falls on the leaders. I think Dib did a good job of it recently in rehabing a lot of what was tolerated in Oren especially, and maybe that should be the model.

yeah the ostracization of E-terrorists was an important moral step that needed to be taken, and I think has been taken; people forget how bad it was, or they weren't around when it was bad.  mog literally had to pay for VPNs for his officer-corp during past wars, due to DDOSing, stuff like that used to be the norm, no longer, thank GOD

Hi there I'm Tentoa, I've been involved in the LGBT sphere for practically half my life now; I was in the original LOTC LGBT skype chat. I'm Pan myself, non-binary.

I gotta' say the idea that we should expect people to unanimously agree with our choices and not hold a separate opinion is completely asinine. I am in full agreement that it is everyone's right to go without harassment and go without being DM'd nasty things or made to be unsafe or targeted by OOC vitriol. However, it is absolutely not our place to blanket spaces such as LoTC where writing is a shared hobby to align solely with our political ideologies.

IF you feel that you cannot persist in a space where people are indifferent to your lifestyle and don't go out of their way to be welcoming because they inherently don't agree with what you stand by its your choice to leave that subset of the community and find a more accommodating sphere (As there are many). It is well within our rights to feel safe, it is not within our rights to be unquestionably supported. 

If inclusivity requires dissenting opinions to be silenced then it's not inclusivity, it's just a status quo of violent silence but with a new coat of rainbow paint. Pursue justice for harassment when it is real, but if someone simply disagrees with your viewpoints but makes no effort to engage you with hostility let it go and find somewhere else.

as a proud f word, some valuable advice is to just block these people. don't engage them when they just want to press your buttons, just ignore them and move on. when it comes down to genuine harassment, reporting it formally with screenshots is best, but some idiot spewing slurs in a discord just isn't worth the time of day. be the change you want to see in lotc's culture and stand up to these people if you must, but don't feed into their bully mentality by whining or showing vulnerability. there will always be people like this in every corner of the internet and real life, it's not the most comfy thing as a gay person (or any minority), but it's just how it is. pride through strength, yasssss slay..... boots house.
