THE VALDEV SQUARE IS alive and humming with activity. Haeseni Independence Day is approaching, and everyone is eagerly awaiting the upcoming festivities. Merchants hang up banners outside shopfronts, drag carts into the square, and begin collecting anniversary-themed goods to sell. Melisende sits at the corner of the square at her easel, paints in hand. She watches the flurry of colour and activity in the square with an attentive eye, waiting for just the right scene to depict...

 

There!

 

In the middle of the square, Eunica and Sonya build a fire, while Brita hauls logs for them. The fire has just struck alight, and Eunica leaps into the air with glee. Melisende nods to herself, and swiftly sketches the scene before it leaves her memory. This, she decides, is what Haense is: a warm fire, her joyful friends, and four beautiful dresses.
