Temp Mining Plugin And Final Calendar Decision

Hey Anthos :)

Rather than waste space on the forums, I decided to combine two very important threads into one, that being some information on the new temporary mining plugin as well as our final decision on the calendar (Gee, really Alan? I can read the title you silly rabbit!). So, rather than waste your precious time with abnormally large words and unnaturally long useless phrases and run on sentences that fail to convey a meaningful point any better than a simple short statement of obvious and tasteful wording that was cleverly chosen by t-- Oh wait I'm doing it anyways... On to the point!

Temporary Mining Plugin

As was previously mentioned in the thread detailing the release of the first Iron Mine, we (or rather Telanir) planned to work on a mining plugin that would solve the majority of the player's issues that we could use until the full system releases with the professions plugin. This plugin has since been finished, and I'm sure many of you have since noticed the effects of the plugin in your travels through the mines.

This plugin essentially drastically reduces the respawn times for ores in the mines, for example the 1 hour 36 minute coal respawn time was reduced to 8 minutes! However, along with the drastically reduced times, we compensated by adding a percent chance factor when mining. This means that you are not guaranteed to successfully acquire an ore upon mining the block! Higher tiered ores have higher respawn times and lower percent chances, though not to a point that acquiring ore is rare. Rather than give you all the exact values for each ore, I instead implore that you take the time to give the mines a look for yourself and find out! :)

Final Calendar Decision

Upon reviewing this thread, we have come to a decision regarding the options that you guys chose! We will be going with Freya's system for the month names, the 14 day week and the Aegis year naming method.

We chose Freya's system because it was the most popular, and although it surely was not the majority (the percentage was only around 40%), we figured that everyone who voted for Ptah's system obviously at least partly liked Freya's as it included all of it's elements, so we figured that it would be the safest option to choose (not to mention our reluctance to create yet another poll >_>).

Although I'm sure there will be debate over that decision, I'm positive that the majority of the disagreement will arise over the length of the year at 14 days. Trust me when I say that we have spent weeks discussion the various issues with all lengths, and although it has its cons, 14 days is the best option to go with, especially seeing as it won the vote over 7 days. That's not to say that you can not bring up your problems with this decision, however, as we will listen as always.

Lastly, it pretty much goes without saying that we're going with the Aegis years as the votes for it blew the other option out of the water without question, and I must admit that I myself am excited to see the years emerge in the time plugin that will hopefully be coded soon (hint hint :3).

Also, do note that none of this is set in stone. Though we are set in this decision, we are unsure yet how difficult it will be or how long it will take to code everything, so if problems arise we may have to change things around a bit. However, should any problems arise, as always we will be sure to notify you guys to prevent confusion and ensure proper communication. I do doubt that any issues will arise, but I'm merely saying this in the event that something does happen. Better sorry than safe, as they say... or was it the other way around? ;)

So...

...tell us what you think! Are you pleased with the way things turned out, or disappointed? Were you expecting more, or is what we have done good enough? I'd love your feedback, and although I do enjoy the suggestions of GMs as well, their stale foul breath and emotionless responses do unnerve me at times, so please help a friend out here!

- Your friendly neighborhood monkey, Alan, and the wonderful coder extraordinaire, Telanir

I kept saying a slight change to the mining system was coming! Yay!

^^ Thanks to Alan for doing an excellent job with the mines, and Telanir for his little codey-things.

Every Human Noblemen is cursing at the new calender.

Why would the humans be against this new calendar? If anything it's better for them, because before years were 12 days long and now they're 14 days long, so time has slowed a bit. Why would this make humans less than content?

So day cycle is one hour. 30min day, 30min night.

2 days is one month in game

Therefore 48 days are in a month in game

2 weeks is one year in game

Therefore 336 days is one year in game

Again I will bring up the issue with this. If this is the case, those who like playing from birth to adulthood will be stuck that way for 36 weeks, that is nearly a full year IRL.

And it causes problems with Elves. I myself would like to have more than one child on my elf character, but to wait 20+ weeks (five months) between the two is quite annoying.

I would like to see something done with this as this will put a damper on MANY roleplayers who enjoy growing up.

I am not saying change the lore, but what I am saying is you are making a good number of Roleplayers unhappy by making them stay as children for nearly a whole IRL year.

If they try to age faster, people will complain as Powergaming and thus ruin the joy of child roleplay.

Just saying.

Elves aren't restricted to a single child. They are not strictly infertile, just really rarely conceive a child.

An elf lives enough time to be able to have in average 3 children, where as humans can have as many as they want for their chance of conceiving a child is of 1/2.

Many elves roleplay fertility correctly, not so many humans age their characters correctly.

My character is half elven. I only want her to have two kids, period. but with this new aging system, its going to make it more and more common for people with elven or even half elven characters to somehow have twins, or even triplets when there are no genes for it...

The new changes behind the mining system are quite appealing.  Gives a sort of "randomness" quality when mining.

I'm a bit bummed out that I didn't get to vote on the updated calender system (too busy with finals and stressing over the computer science assignments).  I can't say that I am thrilled about the new calender system set up but at least we are getting one at long last.

The only thing that somewhat irks me is the IG year being changed from one week to two weeks.  I always like the idea of how time flies in LOTC and it probably fits with the setting more in my opinion (helps explain how buildings can seemingly spring up and such).  Still, I'm in the minority in this viewpoint as most players that I know dislike the idea of constantly having to age their characters so quickly.  Maybe more people will have more incentive to not "disregard" adding another point to the birthday counter from now on.

Anyway, those are my thoughts about these recent updates and I hope you find the feedback to be beneficial.  While there are some changes that I am uncomfortable with, I will accept them nevertheless ^_^

Elves shouldn't have more then one child.

Mind telling me how this is possible demographically?

I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit disappointed with the 14 days is a year. I guess whatever the staff thinks best! We'll find a way to make it work.
