  2. Luisa of Rivia felt faint upon reading the missive. Within the corners of her eyes, tears built up. She gasped for air as her husband returned from that failed battle and locked him into her arms. "Oh thank the Exalted that you're home! These hours of dread are over - but we must visit your father at once."
  3. Laurentina of Westfall finally cast a smile down upon her son. She turned to her beloved Manfred and simply commented: "Perhaps he does have what it takes to lead. After all, he is of our blood."
  4. The Lady Treasurer of Oren smiles.
  5. "Those aren't news... Everyone already knew that Balian and the Church are both full with vipers. Death to them all," commented Luisa bitterly.
  6. Luisa of Rivia smiled softly to herself upon seeing the missive on her desk. How fragile peace can be.
  7. Aloisia of Rivia nodded her head in satisfaction upon seeing the excellent work her nephew and sister in law have put into the heraldic roll.
  8. "Are you not pleased?" asked the brunette woman of Rivia as she held her newborn in her arms so that his father might be able to see him. A simple "Of course." had been the answer. Back then, Aloisia had been satisfied. She smiled proudly from ear to ear. Never before had she been so euphoric - yet her feelings were never quite returned. It became more apparent to her over those few years that they were married. Never would either of them voice what they both thought - but it was as clear as day. Him, introverted and preferring the confines of Kaer Blanche - her, often times a bit of a party animal looking for entertainment in the capital as a youngster does. They were ill-matched, but their fate had been sealed. Luisa decided to make the best of it, for their son's sake. She was prepared to live thirty, maybe fourty years in a veil of uncertainty, never quite fitting in. She was prepared to give up her hopes for romance and happiness in order to do what was expected of her. That dreadful day when it happened, they had a disagreement over the fate of a traitor to the kingdom of Oren. All too nice was it when someone ushered them out to visit some place. "STAB HIM! ITS HIM OR US!" Owyn had yelled. Luisa held the blade - but she couldnt. She couldnt do it and that cost her husband's life, some fourty years too early. Whilst laying in the hospital bed in Vienne after being treated and questioned, Luisa remembered his instructions. And then, she wept. Had she acted, he might still be alive. Or perhaps they'd both be dead. Either way, now it felt as though she had betrayed Owyn and would pay for it for the rest of her life. Never would she have to give up on her hopes and dreams for the sake of her marriage, but her son would also never know what it is like to grow up with a father. And never before had Luisa beaten herself up this much over being selfish. She prayed to and for Owyn, that night: "I will never let him forget you. I will never let him think that you did not love him - never. I'm sorry for everything and I hope that.. in death, you can forgive me."

  19. Laurentina smiles from within her husband's warm grasp, having been reunited with the man she so dearly loved. "She will make us proud," commented the woman to those dear to the Princess Imperial.
  20. A DANCE WITH DEATH “Manfred would keep the gate open and have a guard,” spoke a person. That struck her ire. Again and again, Laurentina was reminded of how terrible she was at this. She was never born to do this. She was never meant to do this and she did not want to do this. “Well, I am NOT Manfred,” snapped the Lady Arichsdorf, bitter as she often was in the months after her husband’s death. She was not a leader. She was not a leader. She was not a leader. “You are running out of advisors,” spoke the man coldly. Perhaps it did not have the effect he wanted it to have. “Yelling at them might not be exactly what you want to do.” As he turned away and his footsteps faded, a tear fell from her eyes. Laurentina’s gaze turned over to the Cathedral of the faith she had abandoned for love. Was she a fool? Perhaps so, indeed. Not even thirty and ghosts keep haunting her. Her mother, her father, her sisters and brother. Tears began to fall uncontrollably. Noone noticed as the Lady approached the Cathedral. Happier days flashed before her mind. How she missed Catherine, her best friend. How Helton and Henrietta mothered her and how her older sister, Daphne, shone a light upon her. How she shone when she became ruby of the Astercalia. The pride her father felt for her that day still brought a smile to her face. The fluttering she felt within her stomach when her husband kissed her for the first time. And then, a year later, when they stood before Philip III and Anastasia I, who wed them. She experienced love when she held her firstborn, Athelred Heltyn, within her arms. Five more followed, each and every one of them sparked joy in Laurentina whenever she thought of them. Pride washed over her when she thought of the people of Arichsdorf, who used to be so close. Noone noticed as she broke through some doors and moved up the stairs to the clocktower. Was it a sin? Was this the answer? She had never felt so desperate. It clung to her, for hours, days, weeks, months - years even. Inhale. Exhale. “It will be alright.” Laurentina spotted a smile as she walked on ahead. Ghosts of her past visited her, all of which had their dance with death. Family, friends, all those she loved so dearly. They were just out of reach. “Just a step. One step. Stop being a coward, face it - for once.” Inhale. She extended her hand out. “Wait, wait for me! Don’t leave - I am coming!” And as she took that fateful step, the desperation faded and became euphoria. It WILL be alright. I’ll be home with them. Come, dance with me! Laurentina von Arichsdorf (neé Helvets) 1842-1870
